Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: I welcome Ms Laura Regan and congratulate her on completing her four-year electrician apprenticeship with the ESB. She is now a qualified electrician and has secured a full-time job with the ESB. I also welcome Mr. Paddy Power. He is from Wexford and he is in the final year of his three-year insurance apprenticeship that will lead to a level 8 degree. He was part of the first intake of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: I thank Paddy and Laura for their comments. I congratulate both of them on their achievements. Laura has broken the mould as a young girl by qualifying as an electrician in the ESB because only 2% of women and girls undertake apprenticeships. What Laura has done is fantastic. Equally, Paddy is fantastic because he bravely changed career. As he has said, he worked in the hospitality...

Mary Butler: Did Ms Regan attend a community college or vocational educational school?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: Ms Regan found that being in a mixed school helped when you were going for the apprenticeship in that you did not feel daunted despite being one of three in a group of 75.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: Can Mr. Power explain how it works? Does he, say, work three days a week with the insurance company and spend two days in college?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: That is fantastic. Can Ms Regan explain whether she had to go to college for some of her apprenticeship?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: Ms Regan struck me when she mentioned "learning while working and getting paid" and that could be the tagline for apprenticeships. It is brilliant and as Mr. Power said it is a career changer. Do the witnesses find that they have a much better work life balance and quality of life now? They probably have a weekend now that they never had.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: That is great to hear.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Ireland's Skills Needs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: Ms Regan is completely right in what she is saying because I attended St. Declan's Community College in Waterford, which is a vocational education committee, VEC, school. My 13 year old daughter started there a couple of months ago and her favourite subject is technical graphics. I was absolutely blown away by that because she is an academic child. She will kill me now if she hears me but...

Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: I refer to amendments Nos. 32 to 34, inclusive, and the 72-hour provision. On 26 May, the people voted to repeal the eighth amendment and provided the Oireachtas with the opportunity to legislate for the termination of pregnancy. When the people cast their votes, they had the heads of Bill to guide them. They stated clearly that there would be a 72-hour waiting period before an abortion...

Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: I also ask the Minister to address the issue of viability. It is a matter I raised a good deal during the campaign and since the referendum. I am also seeking clarity here because it is a very important point. Page 9 of the Bill states that viability "means the point in a pregnancy at which, in the reasonable opinion of a medical practitioner, the foetus is capable of survival outside the...

Mary Butler: 272. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the status of an application on behalf of Waterford City and County Council in relation to capital funding approval for the North Quays project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [48425/18]

Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report Stage (Resumed) (29 Nov 2018)

Mary Butler: There is a genuine concern among some Members present that terminations may be carried out on grounds of disability. I have that genuine concern. No Bill is ever perfect in its infancy. We all know that. There is no doubt that unintended consequences arise. I am looking today to the Minister for a clear commitment that any unborn foetus or baby will not be targeted for abortion because it...
