Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: That is fine.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: As the witnesses are appearing before the committee, I wanted to get clarity regarding public service pensions in general and particularly the witnesses' pension issue. Regarding deficits that have occurred in pension schemes, which is happening across the public service, we find that pension promises that were made can no longer be met because of failures within the organisations to meet...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: May I come back in on one point?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: Chairman-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: If this were a private company quoted on the Stock Exchange and profits were not going right, the board would be replaced by the shareholders. I agree with Mr. O'Leary that statutory instruments are involved in this pension scheme which makes it a public pension scheme as far as I am concerned. If there are problems there, why are the workers paying? Why does the worker always carry the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: I am sorry. I arrived in late. I was at something else.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ Group Pensions: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: The three options on the table are brutal for workers.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: On International Women's Day I would like to remember the women who influenced my life. I would like to remember my mother, my eight sisters, my wife, my daughter, my granddaughters and my daughters-in-law. They are very important people and I would not be standing here today without them. I would also like to remember the women in uniform who serve everywhere. They serve equal to men and...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: I wish to raise the retweeting of a tweet by my colleague, Senator Devine. I know Senator Devine as a hard-working person here in the Seanad, but I could not allow such a thing to go without comment. Brian Stack was a prison officer who served this country during the Troubles. He was murdered by thoughtless people. Like many other members of this country's security forces - prison...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: Murdered.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: I do not believe what I have heard here this afternoon. Senator Murnane O'Connor is a very good friend of mind and I hold her in high esteem-----

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: -----but come on. In terms of young people being uninformed, engaged or not engaged, she has suggested that we should talk to teachers, the mammies and the daddies to raise awareness. I presume that when we are finished doing that she hopes we will have a tea party and that we will all sit down to chat a little bit more. For God's sake, we are talking about people who are 16 years of age....

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: I am delighted that I have provided the House with something to chuckle about. This is really serious; 16 year olds are not children. A couple of weeks ago, we tried to amend the Data Protection Bill to raise the digital age of consent to 16 and the House went berserk. Members said, "No, it should be 13." They are not going to kill us and it is unlikely they will do silly things. They...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: As he is going to support the Bill, I can sit down and relax for the rest of the afternoon. It is great to see a progressive Minister of State who wants to see a progressive society in which 16 years olds and above vote in European, local and, eventually perhaps, presidential elections, not that I have any great interest in that.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: I have given the Senator a fair amount of latitude. She should be dealing with the section not the individual amendments.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Gerard Craughwell: The Senator is specifically outlining one after the other. The section is what is up for discussion and the amendments have been ruled out of order.
