Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: There is none whatsoever in relation to intellectualisation and all of that. Many of the great businesses take people from the arts because they can think creatively - the very word we are all battering about here. This should be done. A student who wants to pick geography, languages or a subject about which they are passionate should be given extra points. I apologise to the Chairman for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Representatives of the Arts Council are to Mr. Carney's left and in front of him are those from Creative Ireland.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I will look at it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I will look at it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Creative Ireland has a huge swag bag which is getting bigger by the minute. It has a new director, Ms Tania Banotti, who is a good girl.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: What has the NCCA done to counteract what the universities have done? I have not heard its voice on this. My preference would obviously be for the arts. I have not heard the NCCA argue against that point. Equilibrium is all very well, but in this instance it is not all very well because what has gone on is appalling. Where is the voice and influence of the NCCA in regard to that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Arts and Education: Discussion (14 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: That is not a definite voice. Rather, it involves words like "probably", "maybe" and "someday". I am surprised that the voice of the NCCA was not louder on this. Maybe it should be and maybe it should take up that cudgel. I am not suggesting that the points go to subjects such as music, but I am surprised that if there is a belief around the equilibrium of subjects and around the...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I agree with what my colleagues said about vulture funds and mortgages. I ask the Leader to bring the Minister for Finance to the House. There is an elephant in the room, namely, the Bank of Scotland (Ireland), which has thousands of mortgages here and it has been fined in England for its seriously unbecoming behaviour. The bank has left this island with our mortgages and we have not seen...

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Report Stage (21 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I agree with what Senator Norris has said. It is the very fact that he named the cat - entrepreneurship - that has us in trouble. I agree with him that ethos and entrepreneurship is a contradiction in terms. When I think of the word "ethos", I think of the idea of the good and I do not necessarily think of the profit margins for entrepreneurs. One might as well mention the idea of...

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Report Stage (21 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I mean the genius of the arts and how the arts have an impact on all human heartbeats and on all ages. I think it is the naming of cats. One should remove the word "entrepreneurship" and insert the idea improving all aspects of life and assisting in the development of the human being, without naming one or any subject. Is that not what a university is about? One could also insert the term...

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Report Stage (21 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Exactly. I agree with the Senator's amendment. I do not like the idea of promoting an entrepreneurial ethos. I do not like its contradictory element. When I think of the word "ethos", I do not think of entrepreneurial skills.

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Report Stage (21 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Yes, I think of ethics.

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Report Stage (21 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I also go right back to the lectures on The Idea of a Universityby John Henry Newman and further back to Plato who put forward the idea of the good. The Minister of State needs to change the legislation. With the naming of cats she has placed the matter in a big profit boundary, which is not what a technological university would set out to do at any level.

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (8 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Senator Craughwell has not given up.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator being the visual aid.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I welcome the Minister of State. I want to tell the young people in the Gallery that I am the only Independent Senator in the Seanad. Every other Independent Senator is part of a group. Within that group, there is a tendency to speak for, with, by and around the group. I am a completely Independent Senator and not, as somebody in Sinn Féin tried to point out, a person who cannot...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is very important to state the case of which one is certain. I find the level of unhappiness and joylessness here fascinating. It appears that if one does not get the vote at 16 and 17 years of age, life will never be the same. In some ways there is a lack of joy here. I say a resounding and echoing "No" to the vote at 16 and 17 years of age. It is fine at 18 years of age. Four or...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I know.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I am just about to conclude. When one is young, one should get on with youth.
