- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jun 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: I second the amendment to the Order of Business, proposed by Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill. As Senator Hildegarde Naughton has done, I ask the Leader to invite the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Ruairí Quinn, to give the House an update on the success or otherwise of the amalgamation of the former vocational education committees into education and training boards. It is...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: Like Senator Mary White and others, I wish Senator Bacik well as a potential future member of the Cabinet or Minister of State. While Senator White said she would be particularly suited to the Department of Justice and Equality, I think she would be well-qualified to take on any ministry save that of defence because I doubt she could sit on the fence for very long. On the sixth of...

Diarmuid Wilson: I welcome the agreement on a memorandum of understanding between a group of business people in counties Cavan and Fermanagh and the current owners of the former Quinn Group to purchase the manufacturing and construction businesses of the former Quinn Group. This is welcome news for people in the locality as it will ensure the businesses remain in the hands of local business people. I also...

Diarmuid Wilson: I second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator Rónán Mullen. I join colleagues in congratulating those who were successful in obtaining promotion to ministerial office and commiserating with those who are no longer either Ministers or Ministers of State. I particularly wish to congratulate the new Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Deputy Heather...
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: I, too, welcome Senator Norris back to the House. It was great to witness him in full flow this morning. I agree with the Cathaoirleach that this House has no role in the appointment of Ministers. Perhaps, however, it should. We should certainly have had some influence in regard to the four excellent members of the newly formed Cabinet who are former Members of the previous Seanad,...
- Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (16 Jul 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: This is my first opportunity to welcome the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Deputy Alan Kelly. As I said on the Order of Business, he is one of four former Members of the last Seanad and we hope to have some influence on him in his decision-making. I hope he will not let us down. It is good to see four former colleagues as senior Ministers and I wish them...

- Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (16 Jul 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: I second the amendment. I warmly welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Coffey. Both the Cathaoirleach and I had the privilege of serving with him in this House prior to the most recent general election. His contributions were always genuine, heartfelt and in the best interests of the country. He looked somewhat hesitant when he first entered the Chamber and left again briefly.
- Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (16 Jul 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: He probably wanted to pinch himself. The Minister of State is welcome and I wish him well. These are both sensible amendments and it would be extremely worthwhile if a framework were put in place in order to allow housing authorities to deal with domestic violence. It is a fact that such violence occurs, in the case of males as well as females. A framework such as that proposed should be...
