Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Public Transport (22 Jun 2022)

Jennifer Whitmore: We will be moving from Cork to Wicklow. I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Josepha Madigan, for coming to the Chamber to take this Topical Issue. I know it is not her area and she will probably be limited in what she can say. It would have been preferable for the Minister for Transport to be here, but I understand that is sometimes not possible. I want to raise the need for a...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Public Transport (22 Jun 2022)

Jennifer Whitmore: I thank the Minister of State. In her response the Minister of State said that all of the settlements defined as such by the CSO are connected. I presume by this she means Greystones, Arklow and the bigger towns. They are connected by a very poor rail service. There are two trains in the morning. This is not sufficient by any stretch of the imagination. Brittas Bay has no public...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (23 Jun 2022)

Jennifer Whitmore: EirGrid has identified an electricity shortfall of up to 700 MW over the coming winters. This equates to approximately 350,000 homes. As a result, the Government has approved the procurement of 450 MW of energy electricity generation, which will cost the State €350 million. The Commission...

Select Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (14 Jun 2022)

Jennifer Whitmore: Amendment No. 35 addresses both the problematic language and the intention in the Bill. While updating of the Juries Act 1976 is welcome, the current wording needs to be improved. It needs to be amended. We presume when the Bill refers to mental or intellectual incapacity rather than capacity that that is a typo, as Deputy Sherlock mentioned. However, even the language "mental or...

Select Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (14 Jun 2022)

Jennifer Whitmore: I move amendment No. 35: In page 62, to delete lines 28 and 29 and substitute the following: “ “A person who, arising from his or her ill health, is resident in a hospital or other similar health care facility or is otherwise (with permissible and practicable decision-making supports and reasonable accommodation consistent with the right to a trial in due course of law)...

Select Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (14 Jun 2022)

Jennifer Whitmore: Our amendment relates to the same measure. It comes back to the issue of "nothing about us without us". It is important to have people who have lived experiences actually inputting into these policy discussions. This is a simple and small measure and it could have a huge impact. I would ask that the Minister consider the amendment.

Select Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (14 Jun 2022)
