James Reilly: There is no text to amend or add to.
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: On the issue of cannabis, I know that the Minister has been working on legislation to make this available to people and I support his endeavours in this regard because I believe it would be a very useful adjunct in treating people with various ailments. I want to return to the issue of Brexit, which was raised, and indeed the Leader of the Opposition's comments around traffic congestion in...

James Reilly: This is just a quick word to support the amendment which is critical to what we have discussed already.
- Seanad: Knowledge Development Box (Certification of Inventions) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (2 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: In fairness, Senator Higgins indicated that she would not proceed with the other two amendments in any event.
- Seanad: Knowledge Development Box (Certification of Inventions) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (2 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: Now.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I would also like to comment on the waiting lists covered by the television programme. It has been an ongoing problem for many years. We want waiting times diminished for patients but it is not and never has been just an issue of resources. I wish to correct the record for the leader of Sinn Féin. During my tenure as Minister for Health, inpatient waiting lists came down to eight...
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I wish to address two issues, the first being the point alluded to by Senators Swanick and Wilson. I thank the Senator for his kind comments. I support what the Senators are trying to achieve here. In addition to the consultant shortage and the difficulty in filling posts, a much broader issue is at play, namely, ageism.
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I am not going to, but I will speak to the proposed amendment even though it has been ruled out on financial grounds, which I fully accept. However, I am not quite sure if a Bill of that nature could be ruled out on such grounds-----
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: If you will allow me to speak without interruption, I will finish quite expeditiously.
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: Otherwise I am quite capable of shouting back.
- Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach. The bottom like here is the performance of one's duty. One's suitability to perform those duties should be based on competence and not age. Everybody is living longer, thankfully - not everybody, obviously. As a group, humanity is living longer. People are healthy. We have already had statements at the Global Economic Forum, pointing out that we have...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: Fianna Fáil hypocrisy.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I wish to respond to the leader of the Opposition's earlier comments, which are utter hypocrisy given the performance of her party's leader when he was Minister for Health. He poured billions into creating the HSE, with which we are now stuck and which is not performing.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: That is fine. Nonetheless, I believe I have an entitlement to comment, just like any other Senator. I could say a lot of things about said party leader when he was Minister, including the large Travers report which was lost behind the back of a radiator, but I will not waste precious time on that. I stood here two days ago and pointed out that no part of the health service exists in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: Indeed, I did, but on the contrary, with very little money, we achieved quite a lot. Nonetheless-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I will not listen to the Leader of the Opposition or any of her allies-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I may be, for which I apologise-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: -----but there is a solution to the problem which lies in having more day hospitals. One is particularly needed in Swords and Fingal to look after both older and younger people.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)
James Reilly: I apologise for not being here for the presentation by the Restaurants Association of Ireland. I want to debunk one issue that has been thrown in here which is that the reduced VAT is some sort of subsidy. It is not a subsidy. It was a very clear financial policy decision to encourage business in the hospitality sector and create jobs, which is exactly what it has done. It is not a...
