Donie Cassidy: -----the difficult decisions that must be made. We all know how easy it is to be the hurler on the ditch. However, when one must play some ground hurling and play centre stage it is a different ball game.

Donie Cassidy: Senator Coffey referred to local government reform and made an urgent request to which I can accede today. I understand that local government reform is being reviewed and examined at present along with the issue of directly elected mayors. I can think of no one better to represent the people of Dublin, should he show the sign, than the great Bertie Ahern.

Donie Cassidy: If a number two were requested it would stay on the northside with Senator Norris and colleagues. We would not look much further than North Great Georges Street.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 May 2009)
Donie Cassidy: Senator Harris has enhanced the House by his membership. I fully agree with his remarks and salute Edna O'Brien. The Senator pointed out to the House the great work that is in progress and the wonderful contribution she has made. Senator Buttimer called for a debate on alcohol and related problems. Such a debate should take place here once every year. I am pleased to inform the House that...
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 May 2009)
Donie Cassidy: My colleague from Westmeath, Senator McFadden, called for a debate on fixed rate mortgages. This is something we should have over the next few weeks and I will endeavour to have the debate take place. It is urgent and pressing. It is a difficult matter but those who have lost their jobs are caught in a very difficult situation. Given that we, as legislators, are doing so much to help out...

Donie Cassidy: Senators Fitzgerald, O'Toole, Prendergast, Buttimer, Quinn, Coghlan, MacSharry, Norris, Healy Eames, Mary White, Cummins, Feeney, Mullen and à Murchú commented on the reports in the media today about the House not sitting yesterday. Never was it further from the truth that this House would have anything to do with a golf event. It had nothing to do with a golf event. As everyone knows, I...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I have reviewed, honestly and truthfully, the proceedings of this House for the past three Tuesdays. I invite anyone to check the record in that respect. I now extend an invitation to the party leaders to meet me tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock before the Order of Business when I will listen to their views on the proceedings that took place here on the past three Tuesdays. I met the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I will meet the party leaders in the morning. Whips and colleagues of various groups can brief their leaders. If the leaders agree I will meet them tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. If there is business to be discussed and legislation to be debated, approved or amended, we will do it. I point out that a Bill has never been guillotined in this House.

- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I want the message to go out loud and clear to the responsible media in particular that under no circumstances was it ever contemplated that this House would not sit because of a game of golf. To my knowledge, the event that took place yesterday was arranged last January. One Member on this side of the House played, namely, myself, as well as three colleagues on the opposite side to honour...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)
Donie Cassidy: Senator Prendergast called for a debate on the HSE with regard to St. Luke's and funding for mental health. I have given a commitment to hold such a debate. The Minister of State, Deputy John Moloney, is very supportive and is willing to come to the House when invited to debate any matter related to his portfolio. Senator Martin Brady and Senator John Hanafin brought to the attention of the...
