- Recent Developments in Northern Ireland: Statements (25 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: The British Government's so-called Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill has been nicknamed the Bill of shame by victims and survivors of the conflict. That is absolutely no surprise. In 2014, the British Government was a co-signatory, with the five main parties in the North, to the Stormont House Agreement. That agreement was the first sign that there would be a human...

- Food Price Rises: Motion [Private Members] (31 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: We know that the cost of living is rising. We know the severe pressure that people are under to heat their homes as well as to put fuel in their cars in order to get to work and do the bare minimum that most people need to do. However, we are facing a new part of the cost of living crisis, that being, food poverty. People are finding it increasingly difficult to put food on the table....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with Ulster Bank and KBC Ireland (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: Gabhaim buíochas leis na finnéithe as teacht os comhair an choiste. A number of my questions have been asked, which is unfortunately the way sometimes when you are late to ask questions in a committee meeting. I have two key questions that follow on from questions that have been raised. First, Deputy Jim O'Callaghan spoke about accounts that are inactive and then become dormant....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with Ulster Bank and KBC Ireland (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: The other question I had was on overdrafts. I understand that the follow-up from that was that the entities that would be looking to pursue those outstanding moneys would be new ones with different banking licences. Is it the case, therefore, that under no circumstances would those moneys be transferred to debt collectors?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with Ulster Bank and KBC Ireland (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: I thank Ms Howard and I understand what she is saying about other accounts and so on. For absolute full clarity, say, somebody does not engage or whatever, and does not have a different account, I take it that will not go to some kind of debt-collecting agency.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with Ulster Bank and KBC Ireland (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: Of course, I understand that is Ulster Bank's priority. The point is that is obviously an issue of concern if Ulster Bank is selling that on. How long will it be before Ulster Bank sells those non-performing loans?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with Ulster Bank and KBC Ireland (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: We would hope that is a situation where nobody falls under this circumstance and Ms Howard is correct to use the committee to put out that plea to people to engage. If there is a situation, as Ms Howard is saying, by next year, does she know when next year? Will it be a full 12 months from when the bank is fully closed? Will it be before that? What form would the sell-off of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with Ulster Bank and KBC Ireland (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: I fully understand that. As a finance committee, we need to look at the issues that could arise. Obviously, it would be in everyone's interest that that does not happen but it will be a matter of concern for us if it is a situation where some do not. It can be a situation realistically that there will be at least one person affected by this, if we are to be frank and honest about that. ...
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tuairimí an Aosa Óg: Plé (18 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: Gabhaim buíochas leis na daltaí as teacht os comhair an choiste. Níl mé mar bhaill den choiste seo ach bhí mé ag iarraidh teacht le héisteacht leo. Bhí na Teachtaí Ó Snodaigh agus Daly ag rá liom go raibh siad iontach níos luaithe ach bhí mé ag coiste eile. Bhí cúpla pointe thar a bheith suimiúil ansin....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Regulation of Lobbying (Amendment) Bill 2022: Discussion (19 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis na finnéithe as ucht teacht os comhair an coiste. I thank our guests for attending this meeting to make their presentations and answer questions. Obviously, it takes a large portion of time out of their day and it is very helpful to us that they have made their time available. My first question relates to section 22. I am looking at...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Regulation of Lobbying (Amendment) Bill 2022: Discussion (19 May 2022)
Mairéad Farrell: That is very interesting. I thank Ms Cassidy. I ask Mr. Devitt to comment on this. What are his views and concerns about section 22?
