Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Report of UN Special Rapporteur on Israel's Conduct of its Occupation of the Palestinian Territory: Discussion (31 Mar 2022)

Charles Flanagan: I thank Professor Lynk for both his presentation and his time. Senator Joe O'Reilly asked the question earlier on, and reference was made to the level of awareness that is bubbling up from society among the Israeli people as to what is happening. As politicians, we note that we reflect our voters. Will Professor Lynk speak to that level of awareness among the general population in Israel...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Report of UN Special Rapporteur on Israel's Conduct of its Occupation of the Palestinian Territory: Discussion (31 Mar 2022)

Charles Flanagan: What countries recognise apartheid today as existing in the world? Until the special rapporteur's report, it was not official, from any official source that I am aware of, that what is happening in Palestine was deemed official as apartheid, but now it is from the report. Are any other agencies or governments in that same space as Professor Lynk is now?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Report of UN Special Rapporteur on Israel's Conduct of its Occupation of the Palestinian Territory: Discussion (31 Mar 2022)

Charles Flanagan: I thank Professor Lynk for his time and for being here, and for dealing with members' questions in such a comprehensive manner. I wish him well into the future. I understand he is finishing up in his current role shortly. I wish him well in whatever role he takes on after that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Business of Joint Committee (5 Apr 2022)

Charles Flanagan: Apologies have been received from Deputy Brady and I welcome in his place Deputy Ó Murchú, who is a member of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs. I remind members this is a hybrid meeting and it is open to members to join us from their offices. Their contributions will be taken in the usual format.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Amnesty International's Report on Israel's Apartheid against Palestinians: Ireland Israel Alliance (5 Apr 2022)

Charles Flanagan: Before going to members of the committee for questions, observations or submissions, I remind our witnesses that it is in response to an invitation from this committee that they are present before us. I very much welcome their contributions to a debate that is a frequent agenda item on our committee. I reject any criticism of this committee. While criticism might be reserved for individual...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Amnesty International's Report on Israel's Apartheid against Palestinians: Ireland Israel Alliance (5 Apr 2022)

Charles Flanagan: What I propose is that Deputy Ó Murchú puts his questions and I will then give an opportunity to other members to put their questions. For ease of discussion, I will then come back to the panellists.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Amnesty International's Report on Israel's Apartheid against Palestinians: Ireland Israel Alliance (5 Apr 2022)

Charles Flanagan: I am going back to the panel. There are a number of questions on a diverse range of issues so Ms Goodall has the unenviable task of dispersing the questions among her panellists. I will allow her full discretion to try to get through as many questions as she can. I suspect that Deputy Ó Murchú would wish to come back in again. I hope we will have time to allow for that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Amnesty International's Report on Israel's Apartheid against Palestinians: Ireland Israel Alliance (5 Apr 2022)

Charles Flanagan: I thank Mr. Haddad. Is Ms Goodall of the opinion that Mr. Haddad's response covered most of the questions? I know Mr. Shatter will wish to come in, as will Ms Griffin.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Amnesty International's Report on Israel's Apartheid against Palestinians: Ireland Israel Alliance (5 Apr 2022)

Charles Flanagan: I hesitate to interrupt, but I see there is a vote in the Seanad and I am sure Senators O'Sullivan and O'Reilly wish to be excused. I thank them for their contributions. Maybe they will be back. Since I have interrupted you, Mr. Shatter, may I ask you a question? In October of last year the Israeli Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, announced the designation of six Palestinian NGOs as...
