- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: I confirm that I am in my office in Leinster House. It is great to listen to Fiacre and Ms Ryan. It is heartening to see their story and I watched the RTÉ documentary yesterday evening. I was in the education sphere. As far as I am concerned, my motto on all of these assistive technologies is that if they work for the individual or for the student, then as a school, community and a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: This committee will be compiling a report at the end of its deliberations. I suggest to the Chair that we request that such research be done on this assistive technology and others and that the Department draft a policy on assistive technology and its merits, not just in this instance. There are other technologies there. Perhaps the committee could make such a suggestion in its report. ...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: Could Ms Ryan explain what it has meant for her? It is probably quite an emotional thing. She described how it was like letting down a barrier or dam in terms of Fiacre's use of the technology. Could she give us the personal human side of it and what it has meant to her and her family?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Employment: Discussion (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: I welcome all the witnesses. As the Chair said earlier, we had a very interesting conversation this morning about how we can make students' school environment a more welcoming place for autistic children. It is important we speak about this also in the context of the workplace. I have a number of questions. I will probably come back in later but I will ask just one or two to start with....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Employment: Discussion (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: Is the funding Specialisterne receives adequate for where it is at the moment or does it project that it will grow again in the future?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Employment: Discussion (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: I take from what Mr. Brabazon has said that, pending funding, Specialisterne Ireland plans to be around for an awful long time and hopes to expand the services it provides. That would be great because I am a convert. After listening to the likes of Frank Holt, I believe the work the group does is great.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Employment: Discussion (13 Dec 2022)
Pádraig O'Sullivan: I will come to ICTU at the end if I get a chance to come in a second time but I will first finish with Specialisterne Ireland. I hate to use the number of people successfully placed as the sole metric of what the group does because, as Mr. Brabazon has said, a lot of it is about raising awareness, which is harder to quantify. However, for brass tacks purposes, how many people have been...
