Seanad: Alcohol Consumption: Statements (Resumed) (17 Oct 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and wish him every success in his new role. Many of my colleagues have made reference to the national substance misuse strategy report and I will not go through all of that again. However, one cannot read it without being shocked and horrified at some of the statistics it contains. In particular, I wish to refer to the statistics relating to...

Seanad: Alcohol Consumption: Statements (Resumed) (17 Oct 2012)

Mary Moran: I wished to say more about the marketing and advertising of alcohol. Children and young people are bombarded with positive images of alcohol through marketing of the product, as was referred to earlier. In effect, the alcohol industry is the child?s primary educator on alcohol. A recent report by a leading youth organisation in Ireland revealed that young people were highly aware of...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Oct 2012)

Mary Moran: I would just like to say that I welcome the news. I agree with Senator Darragh O'Brien in that I, too, would like the Minister for Health to come to the House to discuss several health issues which are very pertinent and need to be discussed at the first possible opportunity. Last night, I attended a meeting run by Patient Focus in regard to the women who were excluded from the original...

Seanad: Junior Certificate Reform and the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy: Statements (23 Oct 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister to the House and welcome the opportunity to participate in this valuable debate. The mission of the Department of Education and Skills is to enable learners to achieve their full potential and contribute to Ireland's economic, social and cultural development. What is wrong with the junior certificate examination? When the results come out every year we read about the...

Seanad: Junior Certificate Reform and the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy: Statements (23 Oct 2012)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister. I will use that phrase the next time. I am acutely aware of how the current system is failing many of our students and I look forward with great enthusiasm to the imminent changes.

This is a great day for the Seanad and we...

Seanad: Social Welfare Appeals System: Motion (7 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I will be brief because I am aware of the time. I commend the Independent Senators for bringing this motion before the House and highlighting the real concerns and problems within the appeals system and the social welfare system. Despite being on the Government side - unfortunately I will have to vote with the Government - I commend them for raising these issues and agree with a great deal...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Special Needs Education: Discussion with Special Needs Parents Association (7 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I am not a member of the committee, but when I realised what was being discussed at this meeting, I decided to come and make a contribution. I congratulate and commend our guests on their ongoing work, with which I am familiar. As a parent of a child with special needs, they outlined the concerns of parents in a nutshell. The fact that I have a child with special needs is one of the main...

Mary Moran: Well done.

Seanad: Matter raised under Standing Order 30 (8 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister to the House and commend her for the terrific amount of work that she had done on the referendum. My fellow colleagues on all sides of the House share that view. I also commend Senator Norris for tabling the motion. We cannot reiterate enough that the substance of the referendum's proposal is not affected by today's ruling. We need to send that message and repeat it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I had a query earlier from a parent of an applicant. They were informed last week that the payment was coming through but yesterday they were informed that there was a mistake in the system and everything had been wiped from the computer. I can give Ms Stewart the names and details after the meeting and I would be grateful if she would look into it. The man I spoke to was distraught.
