International Protection Processing and Enforcement: Statements (5 Nov 2025)

John Lahart: While I agree with much of what the previous speaker said, this Chamber is the citizens' assembly for discussion of this issue. We need to be courageous. Unfortunately, a previous speaker has left the Chamber. There are a couple of points I would have liked to respond to but perhaps that is for another day. The Minister of State will understand if I focus my comments locally or...

John Lahart: I advise members of the constitutional requirement that they must be physically present within the confines of the Leinster House complex in order to participate in public meetings. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (4 Nov 2025)

John Lahart: I read the opening statement earlier and it sets out a very exciting time. It is very positive and I thank Mr. Sweetman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (4 Nov 2025)

John Lahart: In the order of things I am the next speaker today. It does not come around to me that often. Will Mr. Sweetman give us a broad brush stroke of the sectors the 1,000 companies operate in, going from largest to less significant in size terms?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (4 Nov 2025)

John Lahart: Mr. Sweetman used a phrase I have not come across before and it seems deliberately a little vague. It is "contender attitude". What does "contender attitude" mean? The context, if I am correct, is that the countries that can demonstrate the best contender attitude would be in pole position from a trade perspective with the USA. What does this mean?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (4 Nov 2025)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (4 Nov 2025)

John Lahart: So, €1 billion is the figure for US–EU trade flow every six hours. This is impossible to grasp. Mr. Sweetman mentioned that Ireland is ranked sixth on competitiveness but that it is 44th on infrastructure and housing. Could Mr. Sweetman tell us a little more about being 44th and what we have to do?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (4 Nov 2025)

John Lahart: I was surprised by the positive, dynamic nature of Mr. Sweetman’s report. It is very forward-looking. It has exciting energy in terms of our trading relationships with the US and EU. Based on interactions we have had with other witnesses and as part of our roles as TDs and as members of...
