Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Business of Joint Committee (9 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I echo the sentiments in remembering the families who died in Carrickmines. In the past I have experienced similar incidents in Dunsink Lane. The accommodation issues we face have to be addressed. We cannot allow another Carrickmines to happen. There is certainly a lot of work to be done. I will do my utmost, as I have always done, to try to make sure this does not happen again and to...

Financial Resolutions 2025 - Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (8 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: It was in the budget.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Child Protection and Family Support: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Ms McDonagh and Ms Joyce. I will probably touch on a few things they already said. When it comes to child protection or family support, the first thing is they must have proper accommodation. They must have proper housing and facilities. The record of local authorities is so bad when it comes to Travellers. They have not even spent money in certain cases. That could be for...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Child Protection and Family Support: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I agree with Ms Joyce. I would like to see it kept within the community, particularly when it comes to fostering because it is too serious an issue and has a tremendous impact on families. I am not criticising foster families. They are really good but it is the wrong road to go.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Child Protection and Family Support: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: Do the witnesses think DEIS schools have worked particularly well for the Traveller community or families under pressure? Have they ever assessed how good they are. DEIS plus is coming up. I am curious to hear witnesses' thoughts on that.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Child Protection and Family Support: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: Work away.

Situation in Gaza: Statements (1 Oct 2025)

Dessie Ellis: With the slaughter that is now taking place in Gaza, it is easy to forget about the five successive wars that took place in Gaza between 2009 and 2022. The Israeli political and military establishment has long held a disdain and contempt for the Gaza Strip and always had an eye to taking it over and ethnically cleansing the area of its Palestinian population. These previous wars resulted in...

Insurance Costs: Motion [Private Members] (30 Sep 2025)

Dessie Ellis: It is a legal requirement in Ireland to have at least third party car insurance to drive on public roads. Of course, it is important that people have car insurance. It acts as a safety net, protecting those insured against significant financial and personal costs, including medical bills and expensive repairs as a result of an accident. The main contributor to the increasing cost of...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Apprenticeship Incentivisation Programme: Discussion (25 Sep 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I note Senator Rabbitte mentioned the dormant accounts. The fact that this is not funded properly is a big hindrance in terms of looking at it in the future. The long-term funding for TAP is very important. Is there any sort of legal requirement for employers - I know there is for people with a disability - to take on people who are marginalised, as is generally the case for a lot of...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Apprenticeship Incentivisation Programme: Discussion (25 Sep 2025)

Dessie Ellis: Ms Kelly mentioned the different areas, including the uptake in Dublin. She mentioned Limerick, but she never mentioned Cork.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Apprenticeship Incentivisation Programme: Discussion (25 Sep 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I do not know what the situation there is. Notoriously, its local authorities have been very poor when it comes to Traveller issues. I have visited it. I was with delegations in the different areas down there. I do not feel there is a willingness by certain local authorities to weigh in on a lot of things. I have no doubt it is no different when it comes to apprenticeships. There seems...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Implementation of National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy II and Action Plan 2024-2026: Department of Children, Disability and Equality (18 Sep 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Ms Baxter for that. I am glad there is progress being made, from what I can see. I suppose there are huge challenges with the attitudes and we have to address the inequalities that face the communities, whether Roma or Traveller. On the two-year action plan and the strategy going to 2028, Ms Baxter said the Department has done an assessment there and has looked recently at how...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Participation in Education: Department of Education and Youth (17 Jul 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Ms O'Neill for her presentation. A few areas were discussed. She referenced that two co-ordinators have been appointed and 15 link workers. How does that work? Are they being put into different areas? What way is that being approached? On the issue of school inspectors, we have a problem with inspectors in normal schools. We do not seem to have proper inspections. I am not...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Participation in Education: Department of Education and Youth (17 Jul 2025)

Dessie Ellis: Yes.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Participation in Education: Department of Education and Youth (17 Jul 2025)

Dessie Ellis: I know it was not the witness's Department. I was highlighting the fact it would impact on people's education. That is all I was doing and also highlighting that there is a threat to that funding.
