- Gaeltacht Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (13 Jul 2012)
Jerry Buttimer: If I were using empty platitudes, I would not be in this House speaking today; I would be at home in Cork. I love my language and want to see it flourish, as do my colleagues. I know of teachers who are visiting Irish summer camps this week in Cork city and various other parts of the country. They involve young people ag súgradh agus ag caint trà Ghaeilge agus ag foghlaim Gaeilge in the...
- Gaeltacht Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (13 Jul 2012)
Jerry Buttimer: I am in favour not of the traditional Sinn Féin divide-and-conquer approach but of what the Minister of State is doing. I want to bring people together, le chéile, so we can have a language that is spoken and lived and in respect of which there is no differentiation. Nobody would scorn me today, as Deputy TóibÃn has done, for entering the House to speak in support of Irish.
- Gaeltacht Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (13 Jul 2012)
Jerry Buttimer: I wish I could come in here and speak trà Ghaeilge for my whole ten minutes but I cannot do so. However, I hope I will be able to do so in time. It is incumbent on all of us to allow the language to flourish and develop. The gaelscoil movement has shown that the kinds of people who did not traditionally have Irish could take it on and learn it. We must inculcate a love of the language....

- Health Service Budget: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (11 Jul 2012)
Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the Minister. I find the motion before us laughable given the history of the Members opposite whose party when in government was quick to run from having responsibility for the Department of Health. It offered that responsibility to Mary Harney, the previous Minister, as if it was the Sam Maguire or Liam MacCarthy Cup and happily ran to the backbenches and the plinth every time...

It is a right, not a privilege, and an entitlement of all our citizens, urban and rural. Education is not just about the fabric of a classroom or the...
