Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: The NFL is looking to play two games in Europe next year. Croke Park has made a big pitch for one of those. It may well be, if Ambassador Rooney is in a position to leverage it, that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be there. Wembley is the other venue that has made its case. Next September there is an opportunity for many people who have never been here previously to get a flavour of Ireland...

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: The argument we had before was about whether I had raised the issue. I am giving a straight answer to a straight question in saying I did not raise it.

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: Deputy Martin now wants to know the underlying reasons for my not doing so. It is simply the case that we had a lengthy and broad agenda and there were many other issues we had to discuss.

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: I am not sure how much Deputy Martin, when he was Minister for Foreign Affairs, knew about the United States Government's view on bondholders.

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: I do not know whether the Deputy, during his very frequent travels as a member of the last Government, asked any question of any member of the American Government on the issue of burning bondholders or what might happen in the event of Ireland having to go into a programme. I do recall the two caballeros at the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government saying there was no...

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: I am not sure where the then Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Martin, was at that time or whether he had any information about this.

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: People on the Opposition benches at that time were pointing out that the property bubble was about to burst, but there were trenchant defences from these benches and claims it could not happen, that we would never have need of a bailout and it was nonsense to suggest the country would have to enter a programme. I recall Deputy Martin's statements about that. I am not sure whether he, as...

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: If I recall correctly, the basis for speculation about any influence Mr. Geithner might have had is the reports of something he said in the Far East about bondholders.

Official Engagements (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: The Deputy seems to be laying it down that we should all know what the American Government is thinking. The basis of his argument, however, is that Mr. Geithner was at a meeting in the Far East and comments of his were reported.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: It is proposed to take No. 14, European Communities (Amendment) Bill 2012 - Order for Report, Report and Final Stages; No. 15 - Electoral (Amendment) (Political Funding) Bill 2011 [Seanad] - Second Stage (resumed); and No. 16 - Construction Contracts Bill 2010 [Seanad] - Second Stage (resumed). Private Members' business will be No. 5, Local Government (Household Charge) (Repeal) Bill 2012...

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: The heads of that Bill were approved in May and it is expected to be published before the end of this session. On the Deputy's second point, Deputy Richard Boyd Barrett indicated earlier that he and his people intend to organise a national march in protest at household charges on 18 July, that being the date on which the session would end. I advised him that he should be very careful about...

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: Yes.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: Deputy Boyd Barrett has no influence or impact whatsoever on Government business in this House.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: It is not causing any disquiet at all. As the Deputy observed, the Government set up a working committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Don Thornhill. I can confirm that Dr. Thornhill and his committee have completed their work and a copy of the report was furnished to the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: The Minister must now reflect on it and bring forward his recommendations to the Cabinet. I cannot confirm when that will happen. Nor can I confirm when the Government will make a decision on it or speculate on what that might be. As the Deputy is aware, the memorandum of understanding with the troika requires that a property value tax be introduced in 2013.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: I know this has to do with mobile telephony. When himself was here, he went down in history as making one the greatest statements about the mobile phone outside Beaufort church. He said, "How did you know I was here" when the phone rang. In any event, the Bill will be introduced later this year. If Deputy Healy-Rae could arrange it that mobile telephones would work in the Black Valley, it...

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: A draft of this report has been received and the Deputy can take it that it will be finalised very shortly.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: I will work in reverse. I have no date for the probation service Bill. The trust Bill will be introduced next year. The text of the micro-finance agency legislation was approved this morning and it will be published before the House rises for the summer recess.

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: I spoke to the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government-----

Order of Business (19 Jun 2012)

Enda Kenny: -----about this after it was raised by Deputy Ó Cuív. He expects the details of the guidelines to be published in the next two weeks.
