- Appointment of Taoiseach and Nomination of Members of Government (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: The outgoing Minister for Finance, Deputy Noonan, said a year and a half ago that it was unacceptable. Will the new Government stand up to the banks or just dish out more of this type of cheap shot? The new Minister of State with responsibility for the Gaeltacht is going back to his old position. I wish him well. He is a constituency colleague of mine. Let us be clear. There are...

- Appointment of Taoiseach and Nomination of Members of Government (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: The reason I say that is because one can easily get caught up in the bubble of everybody wanting to find out which Minister will occupy which Department minutes or seconds before the announcements are made. However, it is not about personality politics. It is about politics of substance. Members, Ministers and the Taoiseach need to recognise that this country faces substantial and serious...
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: I welcome all our contributors and support staff to the committee. Cuirim fáilte mhór roimh chuile dhuine a tháinig anseo inniu. I will begin with a question for Mr. McCarthy. Given the concentration of corporation tax receipts and the level of corporation tax receipts and the measures we have in place, does Mr. McCarthy believe that we are adopting a prudent position?
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)

- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: He may not have received the memo, but it seems as if the new Taoiseach is getting rid of two of the three policy positions which the chief economist believes allows him to state that we are acting prudently. I refer to the rainy day fund, which I understand is gone, and a reduction in the debt to GDP ratio to 55%.
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: I appreciate that Mr. McCarthy has to deal with what is there and a new Minister for Finance will be appointed later today. We will see what his or her position will be on these matters. I have my own position on the rainy day fund. I thought it was never going to fly. The debt to GDP ratio is a debate that, in my view, is more about headlines. I do not think we will reach the 60% figure...
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)

- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: I am speaking hypothetically. The new Minister and Taoiseach will discuss this in Cabinet. If we went with the balanced budget approach only, and given the level of concentration on corporation tax receipts and our dependency on them, does Mr. McCarthy think that would be a prudent fiscal approach?
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Corporation Tax Receipts: Department of Finance and Revenue Commissioners (14 Jun 2017)
Pearse Doherty: We will move on. I am sure we will have plenty of discussions between now and then. Given the fact that it will not start to have an impact for five years, we have plenty of time for discussions. It is probably better to wait until we have the new definition of how we can measure our economy to start having these real discussions.
