- European Council Meeting: Statements, Questions and Answers (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I would like an update on what the Taoiseach spoke about as regards Türkiye and Cyprus and what sorts of engagements we are talking about as regards possibly bringing something that has been obviously an absolute imposition on the Cypriot people but has not moved for a considerable time. I brought up the fact the Tánaiste has said he is looking for a consensus among like-minded...
- European Council Meeting: Statements, Questions and Answers (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: The Taoiseach has spoken about the fact that there will be a greater level of information with regard to the conversations on Türkiye and Cyprus. He referred somewhat positively to his own engagements on that matter, but I hope we will get some further information. We are dealing with a changed set of geopolitical circumstances because of Russia, which has been the aggressor in chief....
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Constitutional Amendments (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: The current programme for Government commits to holding a referendum to extend the franchise in presidential elections to Irish citizens living outside the State. This was raised previously by me and others, and the Taoiseach stated the work is ongoing on presidential voting rights and that reports had been completed. Will he spell out exactly what work has been undertaken by the Government...
- Ceisteanna - Questions: European Council (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: 11. To ask the Taoiseach for a report on his attendance at the recent European Council meeting. [33968/23]
- Ceisteanna - Questions: European Council (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I back what Deputy Haughey said in the sense that we need to look at the whole issue of migration holistically. We all know that across Europe, but particularly here, of the huge gaps we have regarding employees so we need to rectify that across the board. I would be interested how the Taoiseach thinks the conversations went with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg regarding NATO...
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Departmental Advertising (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Obviously, we are asking questions on what his Department is spending on advertising with RTÉ. There are wider questions for RTÉ but, on some level, that has been done to death, without getting hold of the answers we require in the context of providing the new trust that we hope to find. All present know the importance of public sector broadcasting, however. Are there plans to...
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Departmental Advertising (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: It relates to advertising, although that is only part of it. It is looking at how we advertise processed foods, and whatever else. A sugar tax was introduced and I know that will be reviewed but it is as part of the holistic nature of dealing with childhood obesity in particular. I was probably clearer when I said it the first time.
- Investment in Football: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I am under instruction to welcome Palmerstown FC on behalf of Deputies Mark Ward and Eoin Ó Broin. Other people were declaring an interest and I suppose I should declare at this stage that I still play badly at seven-a-side in the Gaels on a Monday night and occasionally on a Thursday. I also want to refute what I heard at a recent meeting. I thank the Labour Party but I must call out...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Future of the EU-UK Relationship: UK Ambassador to Ireland (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I welcome the ambassador. I was walking out as he was coming in but that was not intentional and no offence was intended. In fairness, we are in a much better place than we were when we spoke previously. We all welcome that fact that the Windsor Framework is in place. I do not think the ambassador will be shocked to hear that we have particular issues and do not believe Brexit was a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Future of the EU-UK Relationship: UK Ambassador to Ireland (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: In fairness, Chair, I agree. What I pointed out towards the end is where we have room for agreement and manoeuvre across the board. Obviously, however, there are issues that still dog the situation.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Future of the EU-UK Relationship: UK Ambassador to Ireland (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I do not think anyone will be shocked that I made those remarks.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Future of the EU-UK Relationship: UK Ambassador to Ireland (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is it. When I was talking-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Future of the EU-UK Relationship: UK Ambassador to Ireland (12 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I would say the ambassador is somewhat shocked that I have not asked abut the conversation that is happening at the minute and the fact we need to look at the means of triggering a referendum on Irish unity.
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Departmental Bodies (11 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I am raising again the issue relating to section 39 workers. They carry out many necessary types of work, including work for people with disabilities, healthcare and addiction services. These services are all talking about how they cannot retain workers. Sometimes that is because people are leaving to work directly for the HSE where they are on better conditions which makes sense from a...
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Departmental Bodies (11 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: 2. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on the work of the social dialogue co-ordination unit of his Department. [32454/23]
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Legislative Measures (11 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: 66. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if she will provide an update on any progress made on advancing duty-of-care legislation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [33960/23]
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Courts Service (11 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: 69. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality when it is expected that the new county registrar for County Louth, based in Dundalk Courthouse, will commence in the position, which has been vacant for 18 months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [33959/23]
- Report on Section 481 - Film Tax Credit: Motion (6 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank the Committee on Budgetary Oversight for doing this work. I thank its members for allowing me to take part in some of the committee's deliberations. The committee heard from a considerable number of witnesses, including representatives of Screen Ireland, Screen Producers Ireland, the Screen Guilds of Ireland and the Irish Film Workers Association. John Arkins and Liz Murray were in...
- European Union Directive: Motion (6 Jul 2023)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: This is a timely motion, as we see the devastating effects of a scandal within a commercial State-sponsored body. I am fairly sure I do not have to name it, as I think everyone will realise I am talking about RTÉ. I do not want to prejudice the work of the relevant committees or wherever else this has to go. I will quote from the briefing note, which states the proposal "will impose...
