Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I recall a particular witness giving us a synopsis of that pilot, which seemed to stall a little bit during the Covid-19 period because there were issues with staffing. Obviously, the schools were closed and we may need to ask for a new pilot.

Seanad: Poverty and Social Exclusion: Motion (19 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I thank the Civil Engagement Group for bringing forward this motion. One of the main reasons so many of us in this House got into politics was to tackle and challenge intergenerational poverty. It is one of the reasons I got into politics. I come from a privileged background. Growing up and helping my dad, I was able to see the difference between what my friends and I had and what other...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: Today I am seeking leave to amend the Order of Business to introduce a Bill on behalf of the cross-party group on cancer care of which I am chair. I refer to the Central Bank (Amendment) Bill 2022, which is colloquially known as the "right to be forgotten" Bill. The aim of the Bill is to ensure that cancer survivors are not denied access to financial products, such as life insurance, due to...

Seanad: Central Bank (Amendment) Bill 2022: First Stage (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I move: That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the Central Bank Act 1942 and prohibit financial service providers from discriminating against survivors of cancer from accessing financial services and to provide for related matters.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Health: Health Service Executive (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I thank our guests for coming in today. I appreciate Mr. O'Regan's comments conveying regret to families. Many families who are at their wits' end are watching proceedings. They feel helpless because they have not been able to get services for their children. They do not know to where to turn. They are turning to us politicians and we do not have the answers either. Our guests have the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Health: Health Service Executive (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: It is a matter of physically getting a parent and a child to another part of the city. It is just not working.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Health: Health Service Executive (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I imagine that if the HSE were to look at its statistics, they would probably show that it has a no-show rate of over 50%. I have not even asked that question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Health: Health Service Executive (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: Absolutely, and I totally agree on the pros and cons of this and I can see what Ms O'Kelly says. It is just that the HSE has to look at its vacancy levels-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Health: Health Service Executive (18 Oct 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: -----and the practicality of it. What Ms O'Kelly outlines is an ideal situation. It is all very ideal. However, the HSE has to look at implementing this practically. I will not say any more.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Joint Meeting with Joint Committee on Disability Matters
Accessibility in the Built Environment, Information and Communication: Discussion
(29 Sep 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: It is great to sit with the Joint Committee on Disability today. It is an honour to be here. The autistic community is probably a lot further behind the blind community. We take for granted all the advances with Braille, the beeping traffic lights and different advances in assistive technology. Members of the blind community are therefore somewhat more able to go about their lives, have a...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Sep 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I join with my colleagues in expressing my admiration for Síofra O'Leary. Members of this House have congratulated her. It is great to have the insight that her father worked here. It brings us even closer to her. I congratulate her. I add to what Senator Flynn said about the videos circulating on social media. The ramming of a Garda car anywhere in the country is disgraceful....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (12 Jul 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I thank Mr. Harris. I was listening to him on the way in. Much of what he said in his opening statement rang true particularly that the public is far ahead of the State when it comes to autism. We can see all of the groups that exist. In my area there is the Dublin 12 Campaign 4 Autism Inclusion and Involve Autism. I know Mr. Harris is very aware of these groups. The work they do is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (12 Jul 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: I will be brief because I am conscious the Minister of State is low on time. I thank her for coming and thank her for her commitment to disabilities. She has moved to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth and I look forward to seeing huge gains while she works with her new line Minister. It is a really exciting time and we are putting our trust in her to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (12 Jul 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: Following on from Deputy O'Sullivan's question, when we ask that question of the Minister and the NCSE, their answer is that they have the access and inclusion model, AIM, and it is amazing. However, this model is not suitable for a lot of families or for many students and schoolgoers with autism. I am glad that Mr. Harris gave the response he gave but what is his view on the AIM programme...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (12 Jul 2022)

Catherine Ardagh: Mr. Harris mentioned home tuition, which forces a lot of early schoolgoers into applied behavioural analysis, ABA, crèches, which are private crèches. Then there is debate on whether that is a good idea. The majority of adults with autism do not agree with any ABA therapies, yet ABA crèches are being offered, which the State is supporting. Maybe they are great; I do not know.
