- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Salary Increase for Position of Secretary General at the Department of Health: Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform (2 Feb 2021)
Marie Sherlock: I too hope it will be passed but it is not helpful, to put it mildly, that the Government and the Minister have decided on this pay package and attracted all this unnecessary attention on what is a very responsible and significant position in the public service. The Government has brought this attention on itself unnecessarily and I ask it to reconsider its decision on the remuneration package.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Jan 2021)
Marie Sherlock: I am heartened to see the Fianna Fáil Bill on period products. The House should note that Senator Rebecca Moynihan and the Labour Party put down a Bill on period products just last week, which is No. 11 on the Order Paper. I wish to raise two issues today. We have spent many months calling for the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, to come to...
- Seanad: Report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation: Statements (Resumed) (26 Jan 2021)
Marie Sherlock: It is very fitting that Senator Boyhan is the Acting Chairperson today. The Senator's contribution to the House last week was a very important one. I welcome the Minister, Deputy O'Gorman. Much has already been said about the report. From my perspective it is hard to put into words the sense of horror and shame reading some of the women's testimonies and the report of the confidential...

Marie Sherlock: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Peter Burke. Has it been communicated to him that someone else will ask Senator McGahon's question?
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: National Planning Framework (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: Senator Keogan is next as Senator McGahon cannot be here.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: National Planning Framework (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State. The Senator has one minute to respond.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: National Planning Framework (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I ask the Minister of State to provide the Senator with a copy of his contribution.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: National Planning Framework (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: My apologies to the Minister of State. I understand his contribution is available to Members. I thank him for coming to the House. I also thank Senator Keogan.
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I move recommendation No. 1: In page 1. In page 9, to delete lines 9 to 24 and substitute the following: “ “(iib) Covid-19 pandemic unemployment payment (within the meaning of the Act of 2005),”, and (b) by inserting the following after subsection (6B): “(6C) The payments, commonly known as the pandemic unemployment payments, made under section...
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: On Committee Stage, I made very clear on behalf of my colleagues in the Labour Party our deep unease - this is shared by other colleagues on this side of the Chamber - regarding what we believe is the retrospective application of income tax to the pandemic unemployment payment, PUP, between 13 March and 5 August. I listened very carefully to the comments the Minister of State made,...
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State for his reply but I am disappointed by it. I believe the goalposts have been shifted since Committee Stage, when Senators were told that people would be horrified to discover that they would not be able to offset some of their tax liability for the PUP against their personal and PAYE tax credits. The recommendation clearly attempts to deal with that by...
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I second the recommendation.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Introduction of Statutory Sick Pay: Discussion (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank ISME and ICTU for their presentations. I apologise if some of my questions have already been asked. Unfortunately, I was delayed at another event. My first question is for Mr. McDonnell and ISME. I very much welcome the fact that ISME supports the call for the statutory right to sick pay in this country. That is progress, but I am not sure that the demand that employers pay...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Introduction of Statutory Sick Pay: Discussion (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I am sorry to interrupt, but what I really want to hear about is the temporary replacement cover. What share of firms or types of work require that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Introduction of Statutory Sick Pay: Discussion (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank Mr. McDonnell for that. What I would respectfully say is that we do need to hear the voice of business in this conversation and discussion about how we pay for sick pay, but we do need hard facts and figures as well. If we can be of assistance in undertaking the research to understand what is going on among ISME's member organisations then that is something to be considered.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Introduction of Statutory Sick Pay: Discussion (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I am really sorry, but I must direct a question to ICTU now. I have a very short time to talk.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Introduction of Statutory Sick Pay: Discussion (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I am sorry, but I must allocate time to ICTU. I thank Mr. McDonnell. I am sorry for being rude. It is good to see Ms King and Dr. Bambrick. I thank them very much for their presentation today. I have two very quick questions. There is a lot of commentary about the Trumpian management of the economy in the United States but on 31 December the Families First Coronavirus Response Act...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Minister of State at the Department of Finance (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State for his presentation. I am conscious he has been asked a number of questions on competition in the insurance market but that is the issue on which I want to touch. It is welcome that this new office has been established. I am sure the Minister of State has a clear vision for what he wants to come out of the review or the work of that office. Does he accept...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Minister of State at the Department of Finance (16 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I am dealing with a company involved in adventure services that cannot source insurance here. I am not talking about the ownership of insurance companies that write insurance policies or operate here. I am simply asking about those companies which are regulated by the Central Bank and write insurance policies here. I am less interested in their ownership than that they are regulated within...
