EU Council Meetings. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Taoiseach said that he was a fellow Irishman and is that not good enough.

EU Council Meetings. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It must go a little deeper than that. Let us make no mistake about it and it is not lost on people that the Taoiseach would not have supported Mr. Bruton if his nomination had been presented for the Presidency of Ireland. There is no question about it.

EU Council Meetings. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: This is not about John Bruton.

EU Council Meetings. (11 Nov 2009)

Constitutional Amendments. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Last week, the Health Information and Quality Authority, HIQA, published a shocking report that highlighted the need for greater protection for children under the Constitution. I noted the Taoiseach's earlier reply that he understands the majority of members of the Joint Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on Children do not support the constitutional amendment route. This Deputy...

Constitutional Amendments. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: -----and the presentation of a constitutional amendment that would enshrine the rights of children in the Constitution. Does the Taoiseach agree that this most recent report, with all that has gone before, compels support for a constitutional amendment and that it is the only and appropriate way to proceed to ensure we reach a point that will guarantee not only the care system but the...

Constitutional Amendments. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Briefly-----

Constitutional Amendments. (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Does the Taoiseach not agree that the Ballydowd facility has only been in existence for nine years? It is a tragic exposure of the failure of our system that when HIQA finally presents its report, the centre has to close. This should have been picked up along the way so that the necessary remedial interventions could have been undertaken to avoid the closure of the centre and the...

Order of Business (11 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It was put to the Taoiseach that he should not proceed with the decisions in the budget measures in April regarding the Christmas payment to social welfare recipients and pensioners. I reiterate that proposal. Following on that, is it intended to have a social welfare Bill following the budget? If so, is the Bill likely to be presented before the Christmas recess? Is the Taoiseach in a...

Order of Business (5 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It has been reported this week that at least one person has been imprisoned by the courts for failure to pay debts-----

Order of Business (5 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: There is. Perhaps the Ceann Comhairle will allow me to finish the sentence. It has been reported this week that at least one person has been imprisoned by the courts for failure to pay debts in respect of either a credit card or financial institution loan. This is happening to at least one person every day since the introduction by Government of the bailout for the banking institutions....

Order of Business (5 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: When does the Tánaiste expect that legislation will be brought forward?

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32 (5 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to address the closure by the Health Service Executive of the special care unit at Ballydowd, the implications and consequences for the children who are housed in that facility and for wider child care services in the State.

Order of Business (5 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: There is an infinitely better solution. Simply put, it is that the Deputies on the Government benches who privately share the concerns expressed by Opposition voices about NAMA, and privately share that opinion, take the courage to oppose the passage of the legislation when it is put to the House today or any other day.

Order of Business (5 Nov 2009)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: NAMA should be opposed because it is a fundamentally flawed formula to address the difficulties that currently bedevil this economy. It was galling yesterday to witness the Minister for Finance sitting beside an OECD representative and calling for the slashing of child benefit, the minimum wage and social welfare payments across the board.
