- An Bille um an gCúigiú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Aois Intofachta chun Oifig an Uachtaráin) 2015: An Dara Céim (Atógáil) - Thirty-fifth Amendment of the Constitution (Age Eligibility for Election to the Office of President) Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak on this issue and thank Deputy Fitzmaurice for sharing his time with me. I am delighted to see my colleague from Tipperary in the Government benches to hear this debate. I have concerns about this referendum. I have the greatest faith in young Irish people. They are the brightest and most intelligent of people in every way, in sport,...

Mattie McGrath: What I am saying is that there is no point in passing Bills here if we are going to break the laws ourselves. The Government of the day clearly broke the law in regard to the children's referendum. This was the unanimous decision of the highest court in this land, but there was no debate and not a word uttered on that here, yet it is an issue I have raised here 116 times. The Minister of...
- Order of Business (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: Does the Taoiseach agree with that aspect of the Constitution which provides that members of the public are entitled to free and unfettered access to courthouses on any day a court is sitting? What is his view on what happened in his home town of Castlebar on Monday morning?
- Order of Business (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: I am discussing legislation. Where is the judicial council Bill the Government promised? Does the Taoiseach find it acceptable that people were denied access to the courthouse in his home town on Monday morning? He could have seen this if he had been in Castlebar on the day. It was wrong and a retrograde step. Does the saying of the rosary by members of the public threaten safety in a...
- Order of Business (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: I want an answer. This is part of a democracy. What is the point of celebrating the 1916 Rising?
- Order of Business (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: The Taoiseach can laugh if he likes, but the last laugh will be on him.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: The Government has made a hames of it.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: And now they are being badly treated by the Government.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: They are being taken over.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: They are making people redundant.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: The Taoiseach has lost all credibility.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: It is a smash and grab exercise.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: Smash and grab.
- Leaders' Questions (25 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: And good work.
- Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (12 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: I do not often agree with Deputies Coppinger or Boyd Barrett, but in this case I do. I also believe that both mothers and fathers matter a great deal in a child's upbringing. I have had a lot of interaction with an organisation called Mothers and Fathers Matter. I am sure the Minister has met its representatives as well. I see nothing wrong with a review, as called for in this amendment....
- Order of Business (12 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: Court hearings are taking place in Clonmel in respect of 55 repossessions. I am delighted the Minister is here and that the Minister for Finance is minding the country when the rest of his colleagues have gone. It is like the flight of the earls. When the Government came to power, the Taoiseach confined travel to ten people. Now the whole lot are gone. I am asking whether, under the...
- Order of Business (12 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: I am referring to two Bills. The Minister might or might not be aware that there is an order for the O'Donnell family to be evicted from Gorse Hill at 5 p.m. tomorrow when the Government will be in absentia and the courts will be closed. I am not fighting for Gorse Hill but I am fighting for the hundreds of people receiving the same treatment, much of it unfair, from the judicial system....
- Order of Business (12 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: The Minister for Finance did promise it. He said last week that it was not a problem in Limerick. He promised to change the Personal Insolvency Act. He introduced the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act, which was more like an eviction Act. It was just a fancy name for it. I am glad the Minister for Finance is remaining at home and I wish the Minister for Education and Skills well on...
- Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Report Stage (12 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: Yes, I have a brief comment. As a previous Deputy noted, the Bill is being rushed and adequate time is not being given to it. I compliment the Chairman of the committee because when we dealt with the Bill on Committee Stage, he was very fair and understanding. I have amendments but I cannot find them in this morning's groupings.
- Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Report Stage (12 Mar 2015)
Mattie McGrath: Yes. It deals with the area of assisted human reproduction and those rights. It is a massive area. The Minister knows that many people are not happy with current adoption rights, including a former Minister and colleague of the current Minister. The process has been rushed at an indecent pace and the Bill is too big and complex to get around it in a year, not to say a month. I am totally...
