Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Fishing Industry (3 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I thank the Minister of State. Sprat is not economically important. It is quite a low-value fishery but it is ecologically valuable. Everything feeds on it, from fish, whales and dolphins to seabirds. If we do not have sprat, we do not have those other species. Unfortunately, we are in a situation where, because it has not been deemed economically valuable enough, we do not have stock...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Fishing Industry (3 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I ask the Minister of State to provide some information on the point that process has reached. I am interested in hearing when a decision will be made. The reality is that, in the absence of data, the fundamental approach to take with any stock is the precautionary principle. That essentially means working on a risk-averse basis. We are not doing that at the moment, and it is important we...

All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Statements (Resumed) (2 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I welcome the all-island strategic rail review. It is a vital step towards connecting the unconnected throughout the country. Ultimately, however, it is a missed opportunity because it is not ambitious enough. Even if it were fully implemented, the review would still leave us behind the Ireland of 1906. It is not often that we look back at the country 100 years ago and say, "Jesus, if we...

Jennifer Whitmore: Is breaking promises how the budgetary process operates?

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: Carbon Budget: Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment (2 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: There are two issues relating to LNG. The first is the potential for a State-owned, State-led and State-controlled temporary emergency LNG facility. The second is whether a commercial LNG facility is allowable or provided for under State policy. These two issues get conflated a lot. What is the State's policy position on commercial LNG? Will the Minister inform An Coimisiún...

Jennifer Whitmore: The commercial aspect.

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: Carbon Budget: Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment (2 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: Perhaps it did not send the letter. I do not know. It was reported that it had been sent in. What is the State's position on commercial LNG? This was an issue in the High Court when An Bord Pleanála was assessing previous applications. I imagine that it is also an issue in this instance under the current application.

Jennifer Whitmore: In general, does the State have a position-----

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: Carbon Budget: Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment (2 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I do not think that is clear. Will the State allow for a commercial LNG facility?

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: Carbon Budget: Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment (2 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I have asked the Minister this previously and I know the planning authorities are separate. However, it is the State's responsibility to set the policy framework. From a policy perspective, will the State allow commercial LNG facility?

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: Carbon Budget: Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment (2 Jul 2025)

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: Carbon Budget: Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment (2 Jul 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: Previously, the position was articulated clearly. That articulation is no longer there. I am seeking a firm articulation of that and it appears An Coimisiún Pleanála is as well.
