Louise O'Reilly: You should be ashamed of yourself, Minister.

Child Poverty and Homelessness: Motion [Private Members] (24 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: You should be ashamed.

Child Poverty and Homelessness: Motion [Private Members] (24 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I thank the Deputies for tabling the motion because we cannot speak enough about child poverty. We on the Opposition benches have put forward plenty of solutions. We have flagged to the Government time and again issues as they arise. They arise in our advice clinics and in our offices and we make sure we bring the message directly to the Government. In his opening remarks, the Minister...

Joint Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Development: Embracing Ireland's Outdoors - National Outdoor Recreation Strategy 2023-2027: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I am sorry that I missed the very start of the meeting but I had read the presentations beforehand. I thank the witnesses for being here and for their work. I have a question about how things happen. There are lots of Departments and agencies involved here, including the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Sport Ireland, the Department of tourism and the...

Joint Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Development: Embracing Ireland's Outdoors - National Outdoor Recreation Strategy 2023-2027: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: My next question relates to how we measure success. The Department will measure some of it against the plans but are people using the facilities counted? Is that being used as evidence of progress being made? If I look around my own area, I can see the things that are successful because I can see people physically there, but that is not a very scientific way of measuring. Does the...

Louise O'Reilly: My final question-----

Energy Costs: Motion [Private Members] (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I start by thanking my colleague an Teachta Pa Daly for this motion and for all of his work on this issue. That we continue to put forward constructive solutions to the crisis caused by this Government is a great credit to my colleagues. As the dark evenings draw in and it starts to get colder, it is important that we turn our attention to the reality of what is happening in homes across...

School Transport: Statements (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: It is a pity the Minister could not stay for the debate. However, I have her script in front of me. It says "check against delivery". That is very good advice because the Government is generally very big on sound bites and woefully inadequate when it comes to actual delivery. In her script, the Minister tells us that solutions are being found every single day. Does this not tell us that...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: Hear, hear.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: Nobody is suggesting that we do.

Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen: Engagement with the Office of the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I welcome all present to the public session of our meeting this evening. I will read some formal notices as it is a requirement. I remind members of the constitutional requirement that members must be physically present within the confines of the place in which Parliament has chosen to sit, namely, Leinster House, in order to participate in public meetings. I will not permit a member to...

Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen: Engagement with the Office of the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I am going to open up the floor to members for questions in the following order: Deputy Buckley, Deputy Brendan Smith and Senator Craughwell.

Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen: Engagement with the Office of the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I am sorry; I have to defer to members. I call Senator Flaherty and then Senator Craughwell if that is in order.

Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen: Engagement with the Office of the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I have some questions of my own, which I will come to when the members have had a chance to question Mr. Justice Mahon, but I will add my voice to the request that there be early engagement with the head of transformation. In light of the functions of both offices, it strikes me that this person will have a lot to learn from his experience. There would be great value in such an engagement.

Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen: Engagement with the Office of the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces (23 Sep 2025)

Louise O'Reilly: I would really caution against doing that.
