Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Grant Payments (13 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: The Oireachtas Library Service carried out important research which showed that at the end of the third quarter in 2013, 3% - 60,000 people - of the employment figures were actually on activation schemes. There is not a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises, SMEs, as there should be. Foreign direct investment is still the golden child of the Government while SMEs are left behind.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Grant Payments (13 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: I am afraid there is not a good balance between the investment in indigenous and overseas business. Almost 70% of the people employed in the State are employed by SMEs. Despite this, the major focus of this Government and the previous Government has been on foreign direct investment. I accept this sector is important as it makes up 90% of our exports. However, there is vulnerability...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Grant Payments (13 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: The ratio of State investment into indigenous versus foreign direct investment is not equivalent to the ratio of employment. In the indigenous sector it is far higher than its proportionate level of investment by the Government. The Minister mentioned the efforts the Government makes towards export-oriented companies. However, export performance is still poor among SMEs. Exports from this...

Gateway Scheme: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: The Minister alluded to the latest figure of 11.9% unemployed in the State. However, if we focus in on the figures, a different story emerges. If it were not for the abundance of these dubious activation schemes-----

Gateway Scheme: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: -----and record emigration, the unemployment rate in this State would be double the actual published figure, and would come in at 22.7%.

Gateway Scheme: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: I will explain it very simply to the Minister so he will understand.

Gateway Scheme: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: To establish whether someone is employed, the quarterly national household survey asks the question: "Did you work even one hour in the last seven days ending on Sunday?" In addition, the survey manual states that a person on internships, Tús, JobBridge or community employment is considered to be in paid work. The unequivocal result is that the employment rate is seriously inflated by...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Scéimeanna Teanga (6 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: Tá an Ghaeilge i ngéarchéim sa tír seo ag an bomaite. Tá na mílte daoine tar éis teacht amach ar na sráideanna de bharr polasaithe an Rialtais, agus an easpa acmhainní agus an easpa oibre ar an ábhar seo. Nuair a bhí an tAire Stáit ag an gcomhchoiste inné, dúirt sé gur daingníodh 16 scéim anuraidh....

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Scéimeanna Teanga (6 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: Dúirt an tAire Stáit go bhfuil sé "ag tógáil céimeanna de réir a chéile". I ndáiríre, táimid ag cúlú de bharr na gcéimeanna sin. Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Scéimeanna Teanga (6 Mar 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: Ní cheapaim go dtuigeann an tAire Stáit cé chomh feargach is atá daoine i dtaobh na ceiste seo. Go simplí, tá siad ag iarraidh dul i dteagmháil leis an Stát agus a gcuid gnó a dhéanamh trí mheán na Gaeilge. Nuair a théann siad i dteagmháil leis an Stát, de ghnáth diúltaíonn dóibh an Ghaeilge a...
