Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: School Facilities (18 Jan 2024)

Ivana Bacik: I thank the Minister of State for the update but it is simply unacceptable that four areas of the building are out of use and have been thus since September. For some administrative reason, the emergency works scheme cannot provide funding for full roof works so this is now being put off, potentially until the summer, meaning that the children will not have access for the full school year to...

An Bille um an Daicheadú Leasú ar an mBunreacht (Cúram), 2023: Céim an Choiste agus na Céimeanna a bheidh Fágtha - Fortieth Amendment of the Constitution (Care) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (17 Jan 2024)

Ivana Bacik: What about the friendship bond? That came up in our hearings. It is perhaps the most expansive way of defining "family" but it is clearly not covered in Article 42B.

Ivana Bacik: Some clarity has been offered today, which was helpful. It would be helpful if the Electoral Commission was able to assist in giving some of that, not directly the Attorney General's advice but certainly a legal basis for the Government's decision to move away from the wording of the Oireachtas joint committee. That would be really helpful in the course of the debate on the referendum.

Ivana Bacik: I thank the Minister for the very full response. I think he has given us some helpful insights, particularly into the rationale for the wording chosen and for moving the clause into a new article 42B.

Ivana Bacik: I will speak to our amendment, which is amendment No. 2. I very much welcome the debate and the introduction of a Bill to amend Article 41 in respect of two things - the current sexist language within it, which refers to a woman as having a life within the home and mothers as having duties within the home. The language in Article 41.2° of the Constitution has long been regarded as...

An Bille um an Naoú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (An Teaghlach), 2023: Céim an Choiste agus na Céimeanna a bheidh Fágtha - Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (17 Jan 2024)

Ivana Bacik: But we also have established case law that states that polygamous marriages are incompatible with the understanding of marriage in Ireland and the Irish Constitution.
