Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cost of Prescription Drugs: Discussion (5 Mar 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: We heard about Gay Byrne's involvement in the campaign. Is there not a need to educate people? I am sure the duty falls on a combination of people and organisations. This relates to my earlier comment that there is a sense of fear and trepidation. This is borne out in the survey. If doctors did not accede to their patients' requests and decided, as Senator Crown suggested, to prescribe...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cost of Prescription Drugs: Discussion (5 Mar 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: The pharmacist in my community and his assistant will take the time to provide an explanation of medicines to their patients. Last year, when my father was ill, the two pharmacists took care to explain that something was for A, B and C and that my father needed to do X, Y and Z. They have helped us in considering how we can improve the implementation of reference pricing and generic substitution to benefit patients and reduce the cost of drugs. We appreciate their investment and the jobs they have created but, wearing our...

Family Home Mortgage Settlement Arrangement Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Mar 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: While I welcome the opportunity to speak on this Bill, we cannot give people false hope. We must encourage engagement both on the part of the banks and people who are in mortgage distress. Banks should be mindful that the importance of the family home cannot be underestimated. It is not a question of bricks and mortar or the number of bedrooms; it is about a lifetime of memories and a key...
