Defence Forces Property (28 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: The feasibility study was finalised and presented to the Department at the end of last year. Six months later, there seems to have been a breakdown in communications somewhere. Will the Minister ask his officials to make contact directly with Longford County Council to see whether this can be progressed so the people of Longford know what is going on?

Defence Forces Personnel (28 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: The Fianna Fáil Party agrees with the need to ensure the Defence Forces are fit for purpose. The new criteria appear to be the same as the criteria currently in place. Would it not be in everyone's interest to make this the base criterion rather than applying a rule that is no longer in use?

Overseas Missions (28 Jun 2011)

Overseas Missions (28 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: We discussed the issue of personnel deployed overseas at the committee meeting last week. I join the Minister in wishing the personnel deploying to Lebanon health and success, and I wish their families well. They follow in a very fine tradition. Overseas service is the lifeblood of the Defence Forces in terms of the experience it gives them. Is the Minister happy that the balance serving...

Overseas Missions (28 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: With regard to the UN management of our forces, did the Minister see the remarks made by Colonel Gerald Aherne in "SIGNAL" magazine last week? Colonel Aherne was the chief of operations on the UN peace enforcement mission in Liberia. He spoke about UN office politics negatively affecting military missions and said that UN structures were beset by a muddled chain of command. He also said...

Naval Service Operations (28 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: The Minister has touched slightly on the subject of my question. I notice the nationality of ships boarded is not included as a targeting measure. Are we precluded from doing this and is it something that should be looked at? Is there a predominance of nationalities among ships boarded and where offences are found, and are those figures available?

Criminal Investigations (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: The proposal in regard to the establishment of an inter-agency unit to progress the investigation is not mine, it is the Minister's own, from a speech he gave on a Private Members' motion in 2009. At that stage, he suggested this would be a way to proceed. The sharing of files and the submission of files to the DPP has been under way for some time. My concern in tabling this question was...

Garda Operations (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: We all congratulate An Garda Síochána for the manner in which the gardaí policed both operations. I appreciate the Minister's difficulties. We are now five weeks down the road and the gardaí have been paid their overtime allowances with their regular salaries. I just wish to get the final costs and draw a line under the matter so that in future a plan is put in place for large security...

Garda Operations (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: Given the amount involved, will it require an additional Estimate? The Minister said previously an amount had been budgeted for the visits but was this much envisaged? Is the €20 million specifically related to Garda activity?

Dara Calleary: I regret any deaths but, given that three of the deaths occurred in 2010, why has there been a delay in getting the report from the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission?

Garda Deployment (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: Have we an extra hour?

Proposed Legislation (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: I welcome the fact that the Minister has brought this Bill so quickly. In the current climate, it is essential. The Minister can be assured of my party's full support, whatever House it comes through, in terms of trying to get this through before the summer recess.

Dara Calleary: Question 1: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the current delays to access a civil lawyer via the Legal Aid Centre; if he will consult with the Department of Social Protection in relation to utilising the new internship scheme to assist the Legal Aid Board in addressing the delays in civil law cases. [16779/11]

Legal Aid Service (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: I apologise for the delay. I want, first, to acknowledge the Minister's record over many years as a practitioner in this area. I know that he has been very involved. I am sure he will agree that to have 3,800 people waiting for this service on 1 June is something that we cannot stand over and we need to put in place some preparations to address this. The internship scheme announced in the...

Legal Aid Service (23 Jun 2011)

Dara Calleary: Regarding the internship scheme, I welcome the commitment of the Minister and his former colleague in the House, Ms Anne Colley. Has the Minister set a deadline by which people must apply to the scheme? Does his office have plans as to when these people will be made available?
