Michael Fitzmaurice: 514. To ask the Minister for Health if he will increase the number of tobacco and vape test purchase checks for ID, given the recent ban on under-18 vape sales and concerns that there are no plans for additional inspections in the HSE service plan; if he will increase the number of inspections for non-compliant or illegal vape products to above 40; and if he will make a statement on the...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Tobacco Control Measures (25 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: 516. To ask the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the NHS ‘swap to stop’ scheme which provides vape starter kits to high-risk groups of smokers such as pregnant women; if the Irish health service would consider offering vape-starter kits, given that Healthy Ireland found that one in four smokers who successfully quit used a vape; and if he will make a...

Child Care (Amendment) Bill 2024: Second Stage (Resumed) (20 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I wish the Minister well in throwing his hat into the ring. As regards the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, while I had many a chat with him in the Chamber over the past number of years since 2016, I could talk to him very well. We get on sound. I might not agree with his policies, but I will draw a separate political line between the man and the ball, as we say in the country. I also wish...

International Protection, Asylum and Migration: Motion (Resumed) (19 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I am opposed to this pact. This country is hell-bent on giving away powers we have. We hear so many people say day in, day out "well it's Europe that's doing this" and "Europe is doing that". I guarantee that in a few years time, as the rules change, as the EU changes and as decisions are made, as we saw with the nature restoration law, we will blame Europe but when we had the chance to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implementation of Irish Inshore Fisheries Sector Strategy 2019-2023: Discussion (19 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank the Minister and his officials. I am no expert in this by any means but a few people have got on to me about it. The Minister might have gone through this because I was not here at the beginning, but was the inshore sector paid any form of compensation from the Brexit adjustment scheme?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implementation of Irish Inshore Fisheries Sector Strategy 2019-2023: Discussion (19 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: When the representatives were having talks with the Minister about trying to get moneys, I understand they were told they could not get compensation under the BAR scheme. They contend that other groups were able to get money under that. Is that fair to say?

[26169/24]

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jun 2024)

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: The Minister of State is not God.

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: We heard that about the habitats directive.

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I welcome the motion. There are a few things to be said. The Minister, Deputy Ryan, and the Minister of State, Deputy Noonan, have gone around Europe, where a lot of countries are kicking back at this law for the simple reason of the consequences it will have. It is bad legislation and should not be let in here. The Minister of State has spoken about it being voluntary. I will give...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Use of Agricultural Land for Renewable Energy: ESB Networks (12 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I welcome the witnesses and I apologise that we are in and out so much. I have a few short questions. Is there still a problem connecting to the grid if somebody puts up turbines or for wind farms? Do people still have to wait on a block or whatever? Is that still the system?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Use of Agricultural Land for Renewable Energy: ESB Networks (12 Jun 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: It might not be the ESB Networks side of it but I was looking at the energy figures. Basically, we brought in a lot of power through the interconnector. That is imported to put it simply. That could be coming from fossil fuel or renewable sources. We then claim to have reduced emissions. Is it not someone else ticking the box on emissions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Use of Agricultural Land for Renewable Energy: ESB Networks (12 Jun 2024)
