Willie O'Dea: The military authorities advise that the number of units in the Defence Forces, both Permanent Defence Force and Reserve Defence Force, in 1990 was 172. The number of units in the Defence Forces as constituted in 2005 is 112. The change in the number of units is a result of the re-organisation of the Defence Forces, which occurred between 1998 and 2005.
