Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Public Transport (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I, too, welcome the Minister. I am delighted he could be here with us this morning. What prompted me to put forward this Commencement matter was anger and frustration in regard to the inconsistent access to public transport in this country, which I hear about and witness, but do not experience because I am able-bodied. When I want to travel by train or bus I can do so. However, for...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Public Transport (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I am glad to hear that there will be an update in early December. This is a great country for producing policies and documents but work and investment are needed. We are talking about encouraging everybody onto public transport. I would love to have a safe and accessible transport for all of my community and friends because I want to know that they are going to be safe. I want to know...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I call for a debate on the future of agriculture in this country. We hear an awful lot of talk about it, especially with COP26 going on. There is an awful lot about what could and should be done. Are we reaching a point where we will start paying, especially marginalised farmers on poor land, to be unproductive, pick blackberries once a year in September and stand at a gate for a tourist?...

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: The Senator cannot move it until after Senator Boyhan's amendment has been dealt with.

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: The Senator will get a chance to move her amendment but she will not have another opportunity to speak on it.

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I call Senator Higgins. She may speak to her amendment but she may not move it at this time.

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I call Senator John McGahon. I believe the Senator is sharing time.

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: Is the Senator sharing time?

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: Is that agreed? Agreed?

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: The Minister of State is very welcome to the House. Much been said this evening. I was listening to the debate and it has been interesting. Everyone is in agreement that we need enormous investment in our public transport. I took a few notes that contain references to the safety, accessibility and availability of that transport. We must make it practical and link up our bus and rail...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Members of the European Parliament (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome the MEPs to the Seanad Chamber. The Mercosur deal has huge ramifications for Irish farmers, who produce high-quality food and engage in the best agricultural practices. We could potentially be importing a lot of food from outside Europe as a result of that deal. This is abhorrent to me and to Irish farmers and I would like to hear our MEPs' views on that.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I thank the witnesses for their attendance here. It is a very interesting session. My questions are for both witnesses as their statements were very similar. Are there any jurisdictions in the EU where the release of mixed personal data to adopted people is done without a domestic legislative framework and sets out the appropriate balance of GDPR rights? Is it the case that under the GDPR,...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: It is not about a veto. I am just talking about slowing up the process. We are all on the same page here. We want to give access to birth information to everybody. That is why we are pushing this legislation. It is not about a veto. I am just afraid that what Mr. Logue is suggesting could actually hold up the process.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: It is not about mixing up tracing. This legislation makes sure that all of that early-life information is available. I see that the witness disagrees. It is clearly laid out in the heads that the legislation makes sure that early-life information is available. If the GDPR applied, could that be vetoed or challenged?

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I want to ask Dr. Logue to retract the statement he made about adopted people coming up to murder their parents. It was a disgusting thing to say. That is not what mothers are afraid of. It is not what they want to protect themselves against. They do not want protection against their children murdering them. Dr. Logue should apologise for having made that comment and he should retract...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I thank the witnesses for the presentation, which is very interesting and worthwhile. I am glad to hear the Data Protection Commission has been working with the Department and there has been very positive feedback from the Data Protection Commission, which is welcome. I do not have many questions. We heard from previous speakers that this legislation is unnecessary. Do the witnesses...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Erin McGreehan: Under GDPR, a person can instruct not to give information relating to himself or herself. It was mentioned that European law trumps the Constitution. If we do not have the framework from this legislation providing for clear detailing of what people can and would get access to, would it be better to scrap the legislation, as mentioned, so we could move to GDPR and let Europe judge all these...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Oct 2021)

Erin McGreehan: I raise matters relating to the HSE. First, I welcome the full reopening of maternity services. I congratulate the Oireachtas women's caucus, Senator Fiona O'Loughlin and the Leader for all their work on this. It is really important and it is way beyond time. The situation was ridiculous. Second, this morning the Joint Committee on Disability Matters heard incredible testimony from...
