Damien English: I accept that achieving what the Deputy wants in full cannot be done by deleting this subsection unless the Minister of State is prepared to table an amendment but removing it will go half way.

Damien English: It will not be written in stone that the leave be terminated in order for it to be open to employers and employees to resolve the issue. Removing this subsection would do no harm. My understanding is that the Bill was intended to bring matters in line with the provisions relating to maternity leave. If one is sick, maternity leave comes into effect after one returns to full health.
