Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Impact of Recession on Low-Paid Workers: Discussion with Mandate (17 Sep 2013)

Dara Calleary: I will move on to that point. The Mandate magazine Shopfloor is a very good magazine. Mandate has the power to bring about change. Someone raised the point when I was coming in to this meeting about how to create awareness. As one of the better-organised unions, Mandate should be promoting the good employers and the businesses that are trying to give a decent wage and fair employment such...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Impact of Recession on Low-Paid Workers: Discussion with Mandate (17 Sep 2013)

Dara Calleary: I welcome the witnesses and I endorse everything that was said about the social welfare system. We have a social welfare system designed for the early part of the 20th century. I met the Minister during the summer and I made that point to her. People are afraid to sign off because it takes so long to sign back on. Deputy Lawlor kicked off the ball on this last year and we need to do...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Enterprise Ireland Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Enterprise Ireland (23 Jul 2013)

Dara Calleary: I welcome the Enterprise Ireland delegation and apologise that I will not be here to listen to the second part of the session. I also wish Mr. Terence O'Rourke well in his new post of chairman designate. He has an excellent set of qualifications. I did not know whether he would attend as his county is not used to success in Gaelic football but I wish him well. He has the task of filling...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (23 Jul 2013)

Dara Calleary: That should be copied to the Competition Authority and a response requested from it. This is potentially very important. People are not in a position to fully engage with the Competition Authority because of the fear of resources and that they are not being heard. This directive seems to have some sort of importance in that so I would like to hear from the Competition Authority.

Order of Business (18 Jul 2013)

Dara Calleary: When Members broke for the recess in 2011 on this day two years ago, the Taoiseach gave a commitment that parliamentary questions would be allowed over recesses. Nothing has been pursued in this regard and, again, no Deputy will have the ability to question Departments between now and the middle of September. Has there been progress in this regard or are there plans to do anything about it?

Order of Business (18 Jul 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Departmental EU Scrutiny Report: Discussion with Secretary General. (16 Jul 2013)

Dara Calleary: I endorse the Chairman's remarks, as I did the Minister's last week, in complimenting the Secretary General and his team in the Department and Brussels on a busy Presidency. I also compliment the Secretary General on his report. I wish to raise specific issues. The youth guarantee may be the most important legacy of our Presidency. Mr. Murphy mentioned that most of the resources would...

Dara Calleary: They are not here.

Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Report Stage (Resumed) (11 Jul 2013)

Dara Calleary: I refer to amendments Nos. 49 and 61. On Second Stage, I spoke of my concerns on section 9, while supporting section 8. Following my speech on Second Stage, I met the Taoiseach informally at a constituency function. He took the time genuinely to go through my concerns. In that regard, I appreciate and fully accept his bona fides, and those of the Minister, in terms of the tightness of...
