- Proposed Approval of the Agreement Between the European Organization for Nuclear Research and Ireland: Motion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: I welcome the very positive news that Ireland will become an associate member of CERN. Ireland has a rich history in research and scientific innovation. Indeed, the Nobel science laureate, Ernest Walton, who was the first person to split the atom, should be recognised here today. Membership will open doors for Irish researchers to take part in CERN scientific programmes and make Irish...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: I welcome the Department representatives, the merchants and the members and representatives of veterinary associations. I have concerns for many of the stakeholders, the farmers, as regards the potential unavailability of vets. That is a major factor. The creation of a monopoly is a concern as well. Monopolies obviously do not end well for the consumer. I have concerns about the...

Paul Lawless: May I stop Ms Garvan there? She mentioned 85,000 prescriptions on the system. How many of those were purchased at the site of a merchant or a pharmacist, for example?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: Was any consideration given at Department level to potentially training merchants to prescribe any type of non-therapeutic medicine or to engage in any way possible such that they would have access to that system?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: In terms of a happy medium when it comes to approach, was there any consideration at Department level as regards the targeted advisory service on animal health, the TASAH scheme whereby a vet could prescribe non-therapeutics at a particular point and then allow, for example, the farmer to purchase the medicines wherever he sees fit? Was that ever considered in this regard?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: Going back to the points about the monopoly of the market, there are concerns here that the large players in the market, who I will not mention, could potentially monopolise this market in the sense that we could actually take the business away from the vets themselves and open the door for such a system to come into play.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: I thank the representatives from the Veterinary Council of Ireland and Veterinary Ireland for appearing before the committee. They are probably getting a sense that there is a concern here. We need to ensure that we address the issues in terms of the spread and so on. However, a monopoly will potentially arise. I understand that Dr. Caroline Garvan earlier advised that there were 85,000...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impacts of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: I am sorry to interrupt Ms Muldoon. I appreciate her answer. Is there any possibility within the TASAH scheme whereby farmers could receive their prescriptions for non-therapeutic medicines? In this way, it may reduce the additional cost. This will bring a cost to farmers; there is no question about that. Is there a possibility? Is that being considered? It may be a question for the...

- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Electricity Grid (10 Jun 2025)
Paul Lawless: This Government, in fairness, is great at documents and plans but very poor on delivery. The Minister spent most of his time acknowledging the work of the ESB, which has done tremendous work, but I want to know how many meters have been cleared. For example, there are thousands of kilometres of ESB lines where trees are growing up through those lines. There are guidelines that state the...
