- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: The problem with Sinn Féin is that it will not go into government in the North or the South and it is also absenting itself from Westminster. The good news, and the Cathaoirleach is right that I should hammer home the good news for Senator Devine and her colleagues, is that an additional €646 million-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: This is the good news that Senator Ó Clochartaigh might like to hear. I do not think he has a press release about it but he might just do me the courtesy of listening to the good news. There is €646 million in current expenditure, more than €200 million of which will be for new developments. That is an additional €471 million for capital over the period from 2018 to...

- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: All the Sinn Féin Party wants is a wealth tax. Tax and spend is all it wants. It is not interested in good news. That is the good news - €75 million but Senator Gavan cannot even welcome it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: I fully agree with Senator Daly on the banking system in our country. There is an absolute need for the banks to recognise they must work with people, whether those in business or agriculture or homeowners. Senator Daly welcomed the fund for agriculture and business in the budget, but the point is-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: He is absolutely correct that the banks must work with people and there needs to be accountability. What is happening with our banks now is they are creating faceless and peopleless banks. When we walk into banks now in parts of Cork city, there is no one in them. There is only machines, and this is not good enough or acceptable. Senator Daly is absolutely correct with regard to the...

Jerry Buttimer: The Minister will be in the House in a couple of weeks. Anybody would recognise the importance of this. I do not have the details of this individual case but, to my knowledge, there is a mutual agreement between the person and the HSE, the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection or the Housing Agency. I am happy to take up the case with the Minister for the Senator. Senator...
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: Senator Ó Clochartaigh raised the very important and sensitive issue of the Sisters of Mercy and Lenaboy Castle. The points he raised certainly need to be investigated if they have not been. I am not familiar with the issue he raised because it is a matter in Galway, but if there is a possibility that children are buried there it needs to be investigated thoroughly and properly by...

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the 18 Members who contributed on the Order of Business. I join the many Senators who paid tribute to the memory of the late and great iarThaoiseach, Liam Cosgrave. Like many others in the House, I attended the funeral last Saturday afternoon and was struck by the simplicity and humility of the occasion which reflected the man he had been. As Monsignor Wilson said, he was a man who...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: Senator Bacik referred to health and Sláintecare. The Minister for Health, Deputy Harris, is very much committed to Sláintecare. He is of the view that an implementation group will be appointed by the end of the year. He is very much committed to the report of the overarching body, which unfortunately did not contain Members of the Seanad, but in the budget we are seeing an...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Oct 2017)
Jerry Buttimer: It was raised on the Order of Business. I know the one line Sinn Féin gets every day is that we cannot praise good news. Sinn Féin does not like to hear good news.

Jerry Buttimer: I remind Senator Murnane O'Connor that on this occasion in the budget the Minister for Health, Deputy Harris, is allocating €209 million to new initiatives where the Government will inform the HSE of what the funding can be spent on. She should remember that it was her party leader who conceived and brought into being the structure of the HSE, the Health Service Executive.
