- Topical Issue Debate: Garda Station Refurbishment (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I thank the Minister for extending sympathy on behalf of the Government to the family of Elisha Gault and saluting all of the emergency people, volunteers and co-ordinators under Superintendent Willie Leahy and Kevin Langton, a good Laois-Offaly man, who is the principal of the secondary school she attended, Comeragh College in Carrick-on-Suir. We know where I am coming from. I am...
- Topical Issue Debate: Community Employment Schemes Eligibility (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: Hear, hear.
- Topical Issue Debate: Garda Station Refurbishment (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I really must raise this issue again. First, I pay tribute to a very sad victim who fell into the river, or was located in the river, in Carrick-on-Suir under the district of Clonmel superintendent Willie Leahy and his sergeant and staff in Carrick-on-Suir. I pay tribute to the public, the Civil Defence and everyone else involved. Carrick-on-Suir River Rescue carried out a huge search for...
- European Council Meeting: Statements (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I am happy to make some comments on the post-EU Council statements. At the European Council, the Taoiseach aligned himself clearly with the position adopted by France's President Macron with respect to the expulsion of Russian diplomatic personnel in what was supposed to be a show of European solidarity. They have not shown us much solidarity in recent times. The Minister of State, Deputy...
- European Council Meeting: Statements (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: What about our trade?
- Questions on Promised Legislation (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I ask about broadband and its roll-out in rural Ireland. It is just not happening notwithstanding all the figures which are spun at us. It is having a hugely detrimental effect on students, businesses and the Action Plan for Rural Development because it is not possible to do business today without access to fast broadband speeds. It is just not being delivered even though it has been...
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: UN Missions (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: 45. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if his attention has been drawn to the growing problem of sexual abuse committed by United Nations peacekeepers on vulnerable populations; if Irish peacekeepers have been implicated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14255/18]
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: UN Missions (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I am asking this question because of the number of people who have contacted my office in disbelief at the almost total absence of media coverage or indeed parliamentary analysis of this problem. While I accept that the vast majority of the UN peacekeeping force are honourable and courageous people, we must accept that this is a problem that must be tackled. Last month, it was reported that...
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: UN Missions (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I too want to state that I fully support and have great respect for the United Nations peacekeepers and indeed the veterans, many of whom I saw on parade on St. Patrick's Day. They are recognised all over the world. I thank the Minister for his reply. As I noted earlier, official UN statistics reveal that over the past five years, the UN has recognised the claims of 612 women and children...
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: UN Missions (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: The article states: "MINUSCA says there was 'sufficient initial evidence' that five of the victims were minors and had been sexually abused." The head of MINUSCA has already expressed his outrage and shame. He went on to say: "It's a sad day because I got to know and to see with my own eyes the depth of the problem and I have to say to start with, that there is not going to be a quick-fix...
- Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Consular Services Data (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: 110. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade the number of Irish citizens that consulates abroad have assisted following imprisonment in the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14257/18]
- Written Answers — Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Trade Agreements (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: 184. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the position of her Department regarding the Mercosur beef trade deal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14256/18]
- Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: TAMS Eligibility (28 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: 234. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if financial assistance is available from his Department, farming organisations or European funding for farmers who require underpasses to access their land which may be crossed by regional roads in cases in which local authorities will not allow entrances onto the road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14343/18]
- Services for People with Disabilities: Motion [Private Members] (27 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I want to deal with several issues. I welcome the people in the Visitors Gallery and our friends in the Press Gallery. On the so-called in loco parentisclause, I raised this issue with the Minister for Health, Deputy Harris, last November and I have also submitted several parliamentary questions on the matter but the HSE has refused to change its position. I ask the Minister to review this...
- Government Response to Salisbury Attack: Statements (27 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I, too, am happy to speak on this important matter. I note, however, that when it comes to debating the merits of the UK Government's response to the alleged Russian use of a nerve agent in the UK on a former Russian agent and his daughter, there are conflicting positions even within our parties here. I also condemn, in the strongest possible way, the use of that nerve agent in any...
- Order of Business (27 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I too have to question how the Tánaiste could make an assertion like this. Deputy Thomas Byrne said on radio that a transition year student would know from a cursory look that this is totally unconstitutional. How did this get into five newspapers today? I seldom agree with Deputy Boyd Barrett but as he suggested, is the Government really trying to turn the people off supporting it?...
- Order of Business (27 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: I too think it is a funny way to do business, to have a short debate this evening after the decision has been made. I disagree with it also and support Deputy Boyd Barrett.
- Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Departmental Funding (27 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: 508. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the level of funding provided by his Department to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland; the number of staff employed by the authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13976/18]
- Questions on Promised Legislation (22 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: My question relates to the commitments in the programme for Government in respect of health care, to which the Tánaiste referred. There is a wonderful institution, St. Theresa's Hospital, in Clogheen, County Tipperary. A local committee and families whose loved ones died in the hospital have raised almost €500,000 and the Health Service Executive, HSE, is to contribute...
- Questions on Promised Legislation (22 Mar 2018)
Mattie McGrath: It is. The programme for Government contains a commitment to fund health care. This is a wonderful community facility which needs more space. The Health Information and Quality Agency, HIQA, is demanding improvements at the hospital. The project must be progressed to meet HIQA standards. We need action from the Government in that regard.
