Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Role and Operation of National Development Finance Agency: Discussion (3 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: Can our guests provide figures regarding what a 25-year contract for a school costs as a basis for comparison? Can they give me a hypothetical generalisation and outline the proportion that is made up of building costs and the proportion that constitutes maintenance costs? I understand that they are all rolled in together.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Role and Operation of National Development Finance Agency: Discussion (3 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: How would that compare to the costs of the State simply directly building and maintaining the facilities itself?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Role and Operation of National Development Finance Agency: Discussion (3 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: How does that make sense? Fundamentally, building materials, labour and maintenance each cost a certain amount. There are prices for these things, there are markets, competition, etc. What explains the difference? Obviously, in the private sector, layers of profit are built in. That is an extra cost the State is paying. All things being equal, this should result in the private sector...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Role and Operation of National Development Finance Agency: Discussion (3 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: However, there is one less level of profit. The main contractor, the equivalent of Carillion in this case, does not exist if the State does it directly. The witness makes a fair point, however, in that a firm such as Sammon is still subcontracted.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Role and Operation of National Development Finance Agency: Discussion (3 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I thank the witnesses.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Sale of Promissory Note Bonds: Discussion (28 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. I pay tribute to all of them, and Ms Fiona Fitzpatrick, for the work they have done against the powerful forces they are up against. It is a community and a campaign fighting for debt justice for people in this country. I agree with the call for a cross-party committee but I also warn that I do not think they will be able to wind up their...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Sale of Promissory Note Bonds: Discussion (28 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: Can Mr. O'Flynn explain what the alternative is?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Sale of Promissory Note Bonds: Discussion (28 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: Is it not the case that the burning of real money contradicts the general policy of quantitative easing? In reality, the fact that we are burning money means what is happening is quantitative squeezing. If we froze the sale of the bonds and wrote down the debt, would there be any negative implication in terms of inflation across the eurozone? What other negative implications might there be?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: EBS Tied Agents: Discussion (28 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: This is a unique business model for EBS from the point of view of the banking sector. Would it make sense if Mr. Kavanagh and the other agents and staff could be brought into the fold of EBS and employed as managers and staff on union agreed salaries etc. as opposed to the continuation of this franchise-type EBS model?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: EBS Tied Agents: Discussion (28 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: It was never put on the table as an option.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: EBS Tied Agents: Discussion (28 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: Okay.

Pre-European Council: Statements (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: The world is watching what is happening in the US with horror as the attacks by Trump on migrants increase, with the upholding of the Muslim ban, the separation and caging of children of migrants and the speech he made to a Conservative PAC in recent days in which he compared migrants with snakes, thereby very clearly dehumanising them. People are rightly horrified about that. Migration...

Questions on Promised Legislation (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: The Government is happy to have him support it.

Questions on Promised Legislation (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: The Taoiseach is happy to have a tax cheat support him.

Questions on Promised Legislation (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: It is undemocratic.

Leaders' Questions (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: That is disappointing and extremely disingenuous because the Taoiseach knows that the Bill that passed Second Stage with his Government's agreement does not prescribe a curriculum. It does not have any intention of doing so. It sets out some extremely broad headings. In particular, what it does, and what the approach that the Taoiseach is outlining will not do, is amend sections 9(d) and...

Leaders' Questions (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: They will not have to teach it.

Leaders' Questions (27 Jun 2018)

Paul Murphy: On Saturday, tens of thousands of people will fill the streets of Dublin celebrating Pride. We will be celebrating marriage equality, the belated apology for criminalisation, the role the LGBTQ+ community continues to play in driving progressive change, illustrated by the 91% who voted for repeal. Pride will also be a protest for trans healthcare, for the immediate roll-out of pre-exposure...
