Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Homeless Figures: Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government (20 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: I am caught between saying I do not like what is being done by HAP because I understand we have to get people into housing and if HAP is one of the mechanisms we have now we are stuck with it. I am not happy with it. I hear people say we are illiterate when it comes to economics but from an economic point of view it does not make sense.

Health Waiting Lists: Motion [Private Members] (20 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: The numbers on waiting lists are at their highest since records began. An astonishing 707,000 patients are waiting for treatment. Repeated comparisons of healthcare waiting times with those in other OECD countries show that there is very significant scope for improvement in Ireland. An example at which we could look is the Portuguese IT model which has led to significant reductions in...

Written Answers — Department of Children and Youth Affairs: Family Resource Centres (20 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: 203. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs if her attention has been drawn to the inequity of funding for family resource centres and that the Ballymun Child and Family Resource Centre receives less funding than the 11 new centres recently brought into the programme; if this anomaly in funding will be corrected; the reason this disparity in funding exists; and if she will make a...

Dublin Fire Brigade: Motion [Private Members] (19 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: Fire fighters with the Dublin Fire Brigade provide fire and emergency medical services to the citizens of Dublin. The Dublin Fire Brigade has more than 800 paramedics offering a world class service to the citizens of Dublin. These skills allow trained Dublin Fire Brigade personnel to assist ambulance and medical personnel in the trauma care of patients particularly for those involved in...

Topical Issue Debate: Early Bird Breakfast Clubs (19 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: I acknowledge that the Ballymun drugs task force has made it clear it will not continue to provide the funding of €122,000. I spoke to many of the principals of the affected schools and most acknowledge they can handle a certain reduction in funding. It is clear this scheme has worked well over the years. I note the Department provides a snack and a lunch, which is reasonable....

Topical Issue Debate: Early Bird Breakfast Clubs (19 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: For 18 years, early bird breakfast clubs have been a huge success in Ballymun. Last year alone, 58,840 breakfasts were served at five DEIS schools in the Ballymun area. Some of the funding for the scheme was provided through the Ballymun local drugs and alcohol task force as well as from other funding sources in different Departments. The BEST project was tasked with managing the scheme...

Questions on Promised Legislation (13 Jun 2018)

Dessie Ellis: The electoral commissions Bill is due in the near future. We are told that legislation is required for online registrations in order to bring us in line with other European countries. For many years we have had controversy over registrations for elections, which made it difficult for ordinary people. Will online registrations be included in this Bill? Will the use of PPS numbers be...

Dessie Ellis: They require much more.

Residential Tenancies (Greater Security of Tenure and Rent Certainty) Bill 2018: Second Stage [Private Members] (30 May 2018)

Dessie Ellis: The rental sector can be a precarious place for those who are renting so it is incumbent on local authorities and the Government to ensure that tenants have the greatest possible security of tenure. This is vital so that families and individuals have stability and not just a sense of security, but actual security. Unfortunately, this is something that a lot of tenants currently lack. Rents...

Residential Tenancies (Student Rents, Rights and Protection) Bill 2018: Second Stage [Private Members] (29 May 2018)

Dessie Ellis: As we know, Ireland has an accommodation crisis which is particularly prevalent for students. It is estimated that we need at least 25,000 additional units of student accommodation. Each year we witness thousands of students scrambling for accommodation. The lucky ones might be able to find something close to the university or college they are attending, but it is more likely that they...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Rebuilding Ireland - Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Discussion (17 May 2018)

Dessie Ellis: With regard to the homeless figures, the Minister was wrong to state certain numbers that were being accounted for without checking the full facts. That was poor on his part. With regard to RAS, many contracts are expiring and others are being terminated. Tenants in the Dublin City Council, DCC, area, in particular, are finding that the scheme cannot deliver them another place or even...

Dessie Ellis: That is happening.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Rebuilding Ireland - Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Discussion (17 May 2018)

Dessie Ellis: This is urgent. Young women and children are being pulled around from Billy to Jack and having to wait for telephone calls late in the day. The family of four I mentioned got a call but Focus Ireland could not secure a place for them having searched everywhere. I had to contact the homeless section of DCC but nothing was available. It is terrible.

Dessie Ellis: Go raibh maith agat a Chathaoirligh. I dtús báire ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas a thabhairt do gach duine a tháinig anseo inniu agus an imní a thaispeáin sibh go léir dúinn. Tá Sinn Féin i bhfabhar metro ach go háirithe táimid an-bhuartha mar gheall ar an bplean suíomh Mobhi a úsáid agus na himpleachtaí atá...
