- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: It is welcome and there is a lot of quality drama being produced in Ireland. RTÉ has been commissioning some of that and it is important. Ms Howard may be aware that this committee is also looking at the issue of how we support regional film and television content production. That is an issue we have been looking at. I do not know if Ms Howard has any perspective on that. It is a...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: I will also tie in something else in the model on the news side. Apart from regionally in Ireland, there are global inputs and there has been some discussion. During the course of last year there was the impact of closing the London office. I am aware during this election year of having Irish voices reporting on it. It has been a pleasure to hear Yvonne Murray's reporting from the UN on...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: Exactly. This is about the commitment. I totally agree about Irish voices and Irish content but that I think that commitment will also continue on the part of RTÉ.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: On the digital side, what is the impact of artificial intelligence? I know we touched on this with regard to the impact on drama and artist's residuals and so on. In the digital age, how does Mr. O'Rourke perceive the impact of AI on RTÉ's work?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: I have a final question. Mr. O'Rourke has obviously come in and is new. We engaged quite a lot with the previous chair, and I felt she made a major contribution during the time. She came in and suddenly lots of things were discovered and were landing on her desk. There is nothing else. Mr. O'Rourke has not discovered anything.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: I think some of Deputy Mattie McGrath's earlier comments were unfair. There were a number of independent reports commissioned by the Minister, and I was happy about how thorough they were and the wide range of recommendations. I think the challenge from my perspective is basically about how quickly you get to implement all of those recommendations. It is critical, in particular on the HR...

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (12 Jun 2024)

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: Like others, I congratulate all those who stood and have been elected and wish all the best to our colleagues in this House. I am conscious that in the naming, Senator Blaney's name was omitted from the list of Senators. As we know, he was part of the strong unified Fianna Fáil team that ran in the Midlands-North-West constituency over the last few days. I will focus on races of a...

- Seanad: Control of Dogs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Second Stage (11 Jun 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: I happy to second the Bill proposed by my colleague, Senator McGreehan, who has regularly raised this issue. I thank the Minister for her leadership. She has worked with the Minister, Deputy McConalogue, to try to address this. It is critical, especially in light of recent events, most notably the death of Nicole Morey, that we take action quickly in this regard. I was particularly...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Human Rights (30 May 2024)
Malcolm Byrne: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I raise the question of the ongoing protests in Georgia. As the Minister of State will know, Ireland has very friendly relations with Georgia but we have seen in recent months, in particular in recent weeks, growing protests on the streets of Georgia against the transparency of foreign influence Bill that the Georgian Dream party is trying to...
