Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Company Law (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State. He and the Cathaoirleach will know that the Companies Act 2014 is a very important document. I was a Member of the Oireachtas when it was passed by these Houses. It was very well teased out and was passed after robust examination. The matter I wish to raise relates to sections 216 and 217 of the Act. These sections relate to the rights of citizens to...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Company Law (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State for a comprehensive response, which I will obviously study. I certainly will not hesitate to take his advice regarding the ongoing review. I have emailed the CEA in respect of this matter but, to date, I have not received a reply. Perhaps I sent it to the wrong address, but I will certainly renew my attempts in light of what the Minister of State said.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Company Law (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State.

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Senator Dolan has six minutes. She is sharing time with Senator Currie, but she can use the six minutes if she wishes because we are ahead of ourselves.

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: We will keep an eye on it.

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: That ends our discussion. Before moving on, I add my compliments to the young political activists in the Visitors Gallery for bringing this to the fore. Even though they are not of my persuasion, as the great poet Macaulay said, on occasions like this: And even the ranks of Tuscany, Could scarce forbear to cheer. That is a Latin tag and they might want to look up that one.

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: When is it proposed to take Committee Stage?

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Seanad: 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement: Motion (30 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Tánaiste is welcome. I apologise for being out of breath. I was stuck at another meeting and could not get away. I also left my notes behind, but I will do the best I can. It is great to see the Tánaiste here. Along with his Cabinet colleagues at the time, he certainly played a major role when the Good Friday Agreement was being drawn up. Everybody who played his or her...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus: Chairperson-Designate (23 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I would like to welcome Koulla. It was very interesting to hear her opening statement. To say that she is eminently qualified for the role is not an overstatement. I note that she is quite happy with the work done by her predecessor, Professor Kilkelly, which means that she is going into a situation with which she is reasonably comfortable. I know very little about prisons or schools of...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus: Chairperson-Designate (23 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: What does it cost per inmate to run the centre? In 2009, somebody calculated it cost about €77,222 to maintain one inmate.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus: Chairperson-Designate (23 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Is it? Anyway, that is one question. Finally, what is the level of success when someone comes to the end of his or her term? How many seem to be able to make their way into the real world in a productive, useful and happy way? How many are recidivists and go back in straight away? Is there a high rate of returns? Unfortunately, my former leader is addressing the Seanad at the moment and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Yesterday there were calls for a debate in the House on the Arab-Israeli conflict. I want to support those calls. It is time that we have a reasoned, logical discussion in the Chamber about the ongoing war between Palestine and Israel. It is fair to say that the narrative on this conflict has been almost entirely one-sided, pro-Palestinian, in these Houses and in this House, particularly...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I cannot hear what the Senator is saying.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: It amazes me how people on the left associate so much with Palestine, an area where there is no tolerance whatsoever of divergence in opinion, whether it is sexual, social or otherwise. I believe deep down that there is a strain of anti-Semitism involved. We saw that recently again in the British Labour Party and it is a reminder of the bad days of Jeremy Corbyn when Jewish people were...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Apr 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I will refer briefly to the excellent figures released yesterday on the Government surplus position. American financial newspapers have today made the point that Ireland's budget surplus is now the highest of the 27 EU member states. It is almost unprecedented at a time when many other countries cannot get into a credit situation. There are lots of reasons we are in this happy state, not...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Mar 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I was at a meeting recently at which the question of NGOs came up. A person in the audience asked what an NGO is and as a public representative, I did my best to explain. It led to an interesting discussion and what came across to me was that the general public do not know much about NGOs, how they operate, who they represent and how they are established. There also seems to be concern...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Foster Care Issues: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Cathaoirleach. I expected to be further down the rota and I was doing a small bit of self-briefing, but I will take my chance when I get it. I welcome the Minister and thank him for the work he and his Department are doing. He is a very busy Minister, with a huge brief. I do not say this often, but he deserves great respect for the amount of work he is taking on and the...
