Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)

Timmy Dooley: That is more than a lot of us could do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)

Timmy Dooley: Are we doing things just for the sake of it or because that is the way it was always done?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)

Timmy Dooley: That is interesting. Mr. Walsh might provide us with a short paper on that, because it would be helpful to feed it in. Other speakers have reflected already on this, but I want to go back to a conversation Mr. Walsh and I had concerning synthetic fuels and the opportunity that is there. It is very important in terms of climate change. Those who want to batter agriculture or aviation say...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I thank Mr. Walsh very much. I look forward to his ongoing engagement with us, in particular on the aviation policy piece and how that might assist us in our work. I thank him again for his assistance.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Nov 2022)

Timmy Dooley: Leaders from around the world met last week and again this week in Sharm el-Sheikh to try to move the world towards having greater respect for the environment by targeting the reduction in carbon emissions. While much of the talk is about policies, targets, limits and restrictions, it is up to us in these Houses to put more time into the actions that need to take place. It is fine to have the...

Seanad: Forestry: Statements (15 Nov 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate. Since my good friend Senator Malcolm Byrne has arrived with a number of fire crew members, I assure them I am not about to say anything explosive that will require their skill sets. I live in a part of County Clare that has a considerable amount of afforestation. We regularly have forest fires at certain times of the year. I pay...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I ask that the Leader would organise a debate in this House on the issue of forestry. Forestry and the continued planting of trees is really important to our economy from a couple of perspectives. First, there is a shortage of timber in Europe for construction and Ireland could benefit handsomely into the future if an appropriate level of planting is done to meet the needs of the next...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I join my party colleague Senator O'Loughlin in congratulating Noeline Blackwell on her recent award. It is appropriate and fitting given she has been a champion of women's rights for many years. She is an unsung hero in society. The primary issue I raise relates to the revaluation of properties that are subject to commercial rates in a number of counties, including Clare. Over recent...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: There are a couple of areas that I want to zone in on. Deputy Carey has already covered the licensing issue. There are good reasons for some aspects of licensing in order that it is not a free for all. That is being reasonably well handled. There are areas, from a rural perspective, where we would like to see a much quicker roll-out of some of the services. I know that when the powers...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I am not in any way against the idea of competition in these services but that is one of the fallouts from having a more competitive environment. The State companies that would ordinarily have had the capacity and funding to do that now have to operate in the lean and commercial environment that Mr. Crowley's company operates in.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I definitely get that. It seems there is a role for the State to have a better training programme, if possible.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: Perhaps the committee should look at that issue. I know it is not the long-term solution but it would certainly help address the immediate problem if the age limit of 70 were extended to 72 or 73. It is hard to be prescriptive about age but all it would take is somebody over 70 to have an accident through ill health or whatever and everybody would be up in arms. The committee should...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: It sets the floor for everyone, but it also sets a career path for people who want to raise a family and pay their bills-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: -----rather than people who are at the end of their career and have a pension or some other access to funds and can do it as a means of earning a little additional revenue. It is frankly the same situation as the taxi service. We have discussed that in this committee. We need to look at professionalisation and recognising a career path for drivers and that has to include the wage structure.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I thank Mr. Crowley for his engagement and take his point.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: The Leader will be aware, and we have read in today's newspapers, that the Irish dancing organisation at the centre of the feis fixing scandal has received a report from Mr. Justice Peart. We now understand that the next phase of that will be an internal process within that organisation. Parents and teachers who have contacted me over recent weeks and again this morning are deeply unhappy...

Seanad: Electricity Costs (Domestic Electricity Accounts) Emergency Measures and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Second Stage (13 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and look forward to the swift passage of the Bill. It is important legislation that attempts, in so far as possible, to address the crisis many families and individuals will face over the coming months. We all are aware of the spiralling cost of gas, the impact it is having on the electricity market and how that permeates down to each individual...

Seanad: Electricity Costs (Domestic Electricity Accounts) Emergency Measures and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Second Stage (13 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: Now.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Oct 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I ask the Leader to organise a debate on the changes proposed under the 2023 Common Agricultural Policy, CAP, programme. For some years now, the Burren region of County Clare has been a specially designated zone under the Burren programme, which was developed by Dr. Brendan Dunford. It is about the appropriate management of the grassland that makes up the Burren, done in a sympathetic way...
