Public Accounts Committee: 2020 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
(16 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: That is in Mr. Watt's correspondence. It refers to €873 million of €1.433 billion, which is, as he says in his letter, the approved budget for the capital project. It remains at €1.433 billion. Is he saying the €873 million that is being drawn down at year end 2021 is not representative of the completion stage, which he said was 60%? Today he said 55%.

Public Accounts Committee: 2020 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (16 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: Yes, but should we hold it for a period? I have not had an opportunity to review it and I have not been able to comment on it. If other members want to agree to publish it, that is no problem, but will it then be too late to write back to the Department?

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (16 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: Perhaps we could leave it until our next meeting.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (16 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: Do we need two separate meetings for TII and the NTA? Perhaps my view is blinkered but one meeting might suffice for those two bodies.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (16 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: Okay. Deputy Catherine Murphy mentioned that we will probably invite the Department of Heath back in, and that might be sooner rather than later, given that today's meeting was dominated by the national children's hospital.

Animal Health and Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Instruction to Committee (15 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: This Bill seeks to ban fur and skin farming of certain animals. The explanatory memorandum published by the Oireachtas states: ...there is now a broad consensus among veterinary and other scientific experts that certain animals should not be farmed for their fur or skin because of serious animal welfare concerns that cannot be mitigated. There are also increasing serious societal concerns...

Appropriation Bill 2021: Second Stage (14 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: Looking at the figures contained in the Appropriation Bill 2021 in isolation, it really does tell us what areas are prioritised in public spending. The biggest areas of spending are education at almost €12 billion, social protection at almost €18 billion and health at almost €22 billion. Fourth on the list is housing, which is being allocated just over €5...

Seafood Taskforce Final Report: Statements (9 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: The issues facing our fishing industry are many. It would be impossible to mention or discuss all the problems that fishermen have raised with me in the context of this report, but I will do my best. Looking at the executive summary of the seafood task force report, a couple of paragraphs jumped out at me. These state that: The Irish seafood sector is, in many ways, ‘in the eye of...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (9 Dec 2021)

Verona Murphy: I thank the Tánaiste. I suppose I am asking the Government, the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and the Minister of State, Deputy Butler, who I appreciate is doing her best and a very good job, to ensure that we do not wait until that review is complete to make good on delivery for carers. The Tánaiste was previously Minister for Health. All we are going to achieve, if we do not...

Verona Murphy: When one looks at how this is structured and divvy it out that is what the figure boils down to and we have looked at it extensively. The figure may vary from county to county but certainly that is per employee how it has been worked out and I will explain.
