- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (5 Jun 2014)
Mark Daly: In regard to the banking inquiry, I welcome the report of the Committee of Selection and look forward to the Government's response. This is a test of the promise to have open and transparent government, a new beginning and a democratic revolution. I hope the Government will see fit to make sure it does not descend into a show trial. A test of that commitment will be whether it seeks to...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (5 Jun 2014)
Mark Daly: What happened in the past is still happening. I want to know what the Government is doing about it and why it has not asked the British ambassador to explain how sanction was given at the highest levels in the British Government to torture Irish citizens.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Mark Daly: I, too, would like to welcome the appointment of Deputy Fitzgerald as Minister for Justice and Equality. When she was a Member of this House, she was fair and equitable and it is great to see that, on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Cuman na mBan, the Minister for Justice and Equality, the acting Garda Commissioner, the Deputy Leader of the Seanad and the Attorney General are women....
- Seanad: Protection of Children's Health from Tobacco Smoke Bill 2012: Report and Final Stages (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I agree with my colleagues that Mr. Shane Conneely deserves great praise for his work on the Bill. It is not often the recognition deservedly due to officials is acknowledged in the House. It is fitting and appropriate that we do so. The Bill shows the strength of independent voices such as those of Senators John Crown and Jillian van Turnhout and those who have a particular skill, whether...
- Seanad: Protection of Children's Health from Tobacco Smoke Bill 2012: Report and Final Stages (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister and thank him for his support for this legislation. I commend Senators van Turnhout and Crown on pushing this forward. Following on from what Senator van Turnhout asked, will this Bill get through the Dáil before the summer recess in light of the fact the amendments are agreed to and that no further amendments should be necessary in the Dáil?
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: In light of the Acting Leader's suggestions, I will withdraw the motion and have it reworded. I hope the motion will then get Government approval and the Government will call on local authorities to name buildings after members of Cumann na mBan.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: Can the House ask the Government to call on the local authorities to deal with it?
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: When we consider that this is the 100th anniversary of Cumann na mBan, we can see that equality eludes us still. This can be compared with the commemoration for the 100th anniversary of the Irish Volunteers in the Garden of Remembrance, broadcast live on television, at which the President spoke and there was a guard of honour. The commemoration for the 100th anniversary of Cumann na mBan...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: Sorry, Paul; I did not hear you.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I was interrupted again, Paul.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: For the first time in the history of the State a bridge over the Liffey was named after a woman, a member of Cumann na mBan. Considering Dublin is quite an old city, that in itself is a disgrace. I propose an amendment to the Order of Business to include our motion that the Government name previously unnamed roads, buildings and parks after Cumann na mBan and its members. I ask Members on...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Diplomatic Representation (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Hayes, to the House. This matter relates to the appointment of an ambassador from the US to Ireland. Since coming into office for his second term, the US President, Mr. Obama, has not yet appointed an ambassador to this country. This has been the longest gap since 1927. There are only 14 countries to which the US has not appointed an...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Diplomatic Representation (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I am encouraged by the fact the Government expects a nomination to be forthcoming in the near future. We hope that it will be a matter of weeks or months and not to be back here next St. Patrick’s Day asking the same question.
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: The Senator cannot be serious.
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I thank the Taoiseach for coming to the House. When he took office, he promised a democratic revolution. He also promised transparency. He was going to learn from the mistakes of the past, reinvent the country and make a covenant with the people to tell them the truth. Did the Secretary General telephone the Commissioner on the Tuesday morning and ask him to reflect on his position? I...
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: If the Senator had the same level of communication, he would not be Government Whip for much longer. In respect of the democratic revolution, it seems the whistleblowers are punished, not protected by the Minister for Justice and Equality. We have spin but not substance.
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I thank the Cathaoirleach for the protection against the Government Whip. Kerrymen can be quite tough on each other. In the first four months of this year four Bills have been passed. At that rate of going, we will pass 12 Bills in the entire year. Does that sound like a democratic revolution? Perhaps the next person on whom the Taoiseach should focus is the Chief Whip in the other House....
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: We question the terms of reference in getting to the truth of the issue of a Garda Commissioner being asked to consider his position. Who applied the pressure and when?
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I thank the Cathaoirleach for his assistance in making sure Senator Paul Coghlan-----
- Seanad: Commission of Investigation (Certain Matters relative to An Garda Síochána and other persons) Order 2014: Motion (16 Apr 2014)
Mark Daly: I thank the Cathaoirleach and the Senator for his valuable contribution. I would like him as Whip to reflect on the democratic revolution - four Bills in four months is simply not good enough.
