Topical Issue Debate: Bullying in Schools (27 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for accepting this issue for discussion. I raise this issue in light of recent research with which I am sure the Minister for Health is only too familiar. The research, published in the Irish Medical Journal, shows that in Ireland suicide is the leading cause of death among young males in the age group 15 to 24. I am conscious that we are having this debate...

Jonathan O'Brien: I wish to share my time with Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn. I welcome the publication of the Bill which has been long-awaited and is universally welcomed, certainly by everyone in this House and by the vast majority of groups advocating on behalf of children. I also wish to pay tribute to the Minister's own determination in pressing ahead with this legislation. It shows a great...

Magdalene Laundries: Motion [Private Members] (25 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: I, too, welcome the opportunity to discuss this important issue. The Sinn Féin Party did everything in its power to try to ensure the motion received the support of every Member. It is unfortunate that we do not find ourselves in that position tonight, but I thank all of the Members who signed the motion and indicated their support for it, especially those in the Technical Group,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Budget 2013: Discussion with Minister for Education and Skills (19 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: The letter states that in order to progress the first payment of the instalment the council will need proof of payment of the household charge. Effectively, it said that unless one can prove that one has paid the household charge it would not release the grant.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Budget 2013: Discussion with Minister for Education and Skills (19 Sep 2012)

Order of Business (18 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: The council is refusing to process applications.

Order of Business (18 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: I do not know whether the Taoiseach has seen the letter from Clare County Council but it states clearly that to process the application, it is seeking proof of payment of the household charge. That is unacceptable and it is not good enough for him to come into the House and wash his hands of it.

Order of Business (18 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: It was also not good enough for the Minister for Education and Skills to support the move by Clare County Council this morning. The Taoiseach and the Minister have a responsibility to ensure that people have access to education and they should not support moves by any county council that prevent access to education. The Taoiseach's comments are not good enough.
