Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2018: Motion (27 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: As the Minister said, these are two important industries for the economy as a whole and, in particular, rural Ireland. On the attempts to get harness racing off the ground in this country, all committee members have all been lobbied by the Irish Harness Racing Association, IHRA. I understand it has put forward a five-year strategic plan for the industry, in co-operation with the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2018: Motion (27 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I am sorry. There are so many bodies that I get mixed up. There was one point on which it took me three or four goes to get an answer out of the Sports Horse Alliance last Tuesday evening. It was about the number of Irish-bred horses jumping internationally as a percentage of the horses competing for Ireland. The figure we were given was that only 10% of the horses that are jumping...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2018: Motion (27 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I want to go back to harness racing and trying to get it off the ground. I wish to follow up on the point Senator Lawlor made about Dundalk racecourse. Harness racing could and should use that facility rather than try to establish a new track. The racecourse facility in Dundalk is ideal for harness racing. In the five races that were held, there was total betting of €850,000 and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implications of Brexit for Agriculture Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I thank Mr. Brennan for his comprehensive presentation. It is just what one would expect from Bord Bia. I had the pleasure to be on the board of Bord Bia for six years and it is an organisation that does its work very professionally and diligently. This report shows its preparedness, what it is putting in place for Brexit, as well as the implications it can have for this country....

Jackie Cahill: I thank the Irish Sport Horse Alliance representatives for the presentation. It raised numerous issues that we need to address. I was given a question on Horse Sport Ireland by Deputy Darragh O'Brien this morning. We met Irish Sport Horse Alliance representatives some months ago and they made a presentation to us. Horse Sport Ireland is a limited company. Will the Irish Sport Horse...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Irish Sport Horse Industry: Discussion (20 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: That shows why we need to invest in and focus on this industry. There was a time when an Irish rider would always ride an Irish bred horse. I am not criticising the riders because I understand they have to go where they can source top class horses but it shows where we have slipped.
