Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2018
Vote 30 - Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Supplementary)
(4 Dec 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I am only trying to find out when I should ask because I will ask it anyway. I might as well get on with it and ask it now. There was a serious article in the agriculture media this week about trim in factories and this is something that farmers have felt aggrieved about for a number of years. It now seems concrete evidence is available that what farmers have suspected for a long time is...

Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2018
Vote 30 - Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Supplementary)
(4 Dec 2018)

Jackie Cahill: What I am going to say may not be received too well but I will say it in any event. In the context of the fodder scheme, I make no apologies for putting forward proposals regarding the fodder crisis. In mid-July, we were facing a famine in the winter. Thankfully, the weather intervened and we got an extremely good back end of the year. However, schemes proposed by us, such as the...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate (28 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I am encouraged by the Minister's reply. Ten years ago there was no Lisheen site adjacent to Thurles and no bioeconomy centre there. The biorefinery has got serious funding and has got the largest ever grant from the EU. That biorefinery will start on the site next year with a capacity to deal with 50,000 tonnes of lactose whey. Tipperary County Council is very enthusiastic about the...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate (28 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: The town of Thurles and mid-Tipperary have lost a great number of factories and employers over the last 30 years. All the stakeholders have been making efforts and are working hard to reverse this trend. Only last year we secured the national apprenticeship centre which is located in the town and there are over 250 apprentices based on the site today. Our small and medium enterprises are...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (28 Nov 2018)

Unfortunately, the situation is getting worse on a weekly basis. Usually in the run-up to Christmas beef prices increase. Unfortunately, the opposite is happening at the back end of 2018. Cow prices, which are usually the barometer of the health of the...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (27 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: Approximately 5,000 farmers have not received their first payment under the single farm payment scheme for 2018. This has been an extremely difficult year for farmers’ incomes, with falling prices and weather conditions. I ask that extra resources be put in place to ensure that those 5,000 farmers will be paid before the Christmas recess.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Areas of Natural Constraint: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (27 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I thank Mr. Dillon and the Department for the presentation. First, I want to express disappointment at our ability to get information on the changes. I tried everywhere over the weekend to get a list of the townlands that have been added and, for that matter, those that have been taken out. I can get a list of all the eligible townlands in the country but there are changes in my county,...
