- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on Future of Europe and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: While he cannot give the entire plan now, how does the Minister of State foresee the future stimulus programme being rolled out?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on Future of Europe and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I remind the Minister of State that it is from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. He has not made it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on Future of Europe and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I had an excuse for checking through the Minister of State's Twitter feed.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on Future of Europe and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I am meant to be in two committees at the same time. The CPC, which was raised by the Chairman, became a big issue because it was reiterated on Thursday that people could not get a direct transfer and would have to sit examinations. It could take two weeks. People are talking about the possibility of relocating. I accept it is all probably contained within the negotiations but I imagine...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on Future of Europe and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I ask the Minister of State to come back on it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I welcome what Ms Lennon said earlier. There was always an Oireachtas email but it is a matter of a contact number. There is always an element of failure when going through a Deputy to get matters such as these sorted quickly. What are the variations in response times associated with the various means by which people can make contact with the company and deal with issues? What will work...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I have encountered people who were complaining they could not make the complaints and went to ComReg.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that. Reputational damage has been referred to. I believe the witnesses need to consider a payback to customers. It is not for us to make a determination on that, however. Eir is 30 staff short of the number it would like. I imagine it might need to review that. People have referred to the consideration of wage structures and so on but these are issues for Eir itself. Eir...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: It will be consistently reviewed.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I disagree with some points that have been made. A skill set is needed to deal with calls. The employee needs to be able to work through the information and training given. It is the second tier, however, that will require technical information.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Has Eir sufficient capacity at technical support level? The delegation has talked about the building of the IFN. Is there capacity in this regard?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that. I do not want to repeat a number of points that have been made. Obviously, Eir has been dealing with the time it takes people to make contact. Issues have also arisen in that people who have passed away have been sent invoices. I imagine Eir will need to review procedures in that regard. People can sometimes understand delays given the added logistics and so on but when...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Exactly. Elderly people, in particular, are encountering difficulties, specifically with telephone line questions that are not being dealt with. They are not people who will make contact via the Internet. I have had one or two of these cases but I will give them to the witnesses afterwards.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Somebody raised with me the cost of rental of a landline. In many cases, it affects old people, possibly in areas where the mobile coverage is not great. Rental can sometimes be more expensive than the calls made. People are cancelling the lines. Is that a matter that could be investigated?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: With regard to Eir's mobile network, people in areas without a good mobile coverage who use the network for broadband sometimes use a TP-Link router and attach an antenna that provides extra capacity. Has Eir had many issues in relation to that? I assume the company has noted a pick-up in the number of people doing that? I am aware that ComReg has difficulties with the use of some of these...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Broadband Connectivity and Telecommunications Issues: Eir (25 Nov 2020)

- Regulation of Lobbying (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage [Private Members] (24 Nov 2020)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Many speakers referred to the belief or perception - some would call it a fact - of there being a cosy cartel between politics and developers, the insurance lobby and anybody who has connections to people in power. That perception is not helped by the situation concerning Mr. Justice Séamus Woulfe and the golfgate event. There is also the situation of the former Ministers of State at...
