Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: We must be careful about that. There is the important principle of the independence of the Judiciary. That said, all of us share a concern about the need for reform of the judicial appointments system. However, reform of the system is very different from abolition or stalemate of any judicial appointments pending the slow progress a Bill makes in either House. There is a concern that...

I also welcome this opportunity to discuss this important Bill on Second Stage and commend my colleague, Senator Ged Nash, on proposing it. It gives me great pleasure to second the Bill on behalf of the group of Labour Party Senators. I welcome the representatives of the Mandate trade union in the Gallery. In a previous life...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I support Senator Black's call for a debate on the recognition of Traveller ethnicity. The previous justice committee, on which the Cathaoirleach sat with me, Senator Mac Lochlainn and others, recommended unanimously that Traveller ethnicity be recognised. It is important and timely to have the debate.I welcome Harriett Bruce and former Labour Party councillor Johnny Walsh, who were in the...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Suspended Sentences of Imprisonment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (15 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality. She is always welcome, particularly when she is commencing Bills, for which I thank her. It is good to see this Bill starting life in the Seanad. Like others, I am happy to express the support of the Labour Party for the Bill which is technical in nature to address the High Court judgment of April 2016 of Mr. Justice...

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister to the House. I also welcome the many people who are in the Gallery to represent the various unions that have been campaigning on this matter for some time. SIPTU, the National Union of Journalists, Equity, the Musicians Union of Ireland and many other unions have a long-standing commitment to reform in this area. The Bill we are considering on Report Stage today...

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I thank Senator Gavan for his words and all colleagues across the floor and on both sides of the House for their support of this Bill. It took support from all sides to ensure it would reach Report Stage in Government time. It is historic because not many Private Members’ Bills have traditionally become law so we very much look forward to this becoming law and welcome the support of...

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I have reserved my comment on this matter until we reached amendment No. 5. I reiterate that I am glad that there is a provision for the coming into force of the Act. I ask the Minister to confirm, in respect of the earlier amendments, that there is nothing in the Bill to prevent reapplication.

Her constructive approach has been welcome and positive. I thank her for closely engaging with us on this legislation from the start. I echo Senator Davitt's words about her capacity for hard work and, in particular, her...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: Others have spoken already about the US presidential election result and clearly that is the issue uppermost in everyone's mind today. I call on the Deputy Leader to organise a debate on foreign policy in this House in light of that election result because there are serious implications for Ireland on which other speakers have touched. Ms Hillary Clinton's defeat is a huge disappointment...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: The House will be taking Committee Stage of the Heritage Bill today. Many of us have expressed opposition to section 8 and the provision which would allow the cutting, destroying and removal of hedgerows in August and burning in uplands in March. We have all received multiple e-mails on this and I hope we can see a way of resolving that issue on Committee Stage.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I object. It is not appropriate.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Media Freedom in Turkey: National Union of Journalists (3 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I thank the witnesses for their comprehensive presentation. I agree with Deputy Darragh O'Brien that all members unreservedly condemn the appalling incursions on press freedom we have seen in Turkey since the failed coup. We also join the witnesses in condemning the coup. It is clear, however, that the response has been disproportionate. If one examines the list of media outlets that have...
