Jackie Cahill: 1549. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government if he will investigate the anomaly whereby a convenience store valuation is radically less than the convenience store element of a convenience store with a forecourt filling station; if he will instruct the Valuation Office to investigate the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. - Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Post Office Network (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: The Minister of State said the viability of the post office depends on the people using the service and I fully agree. The reality, however, is that people in Thurles do not want the post office moved to the shopping centre and will refuse to use it there. The car park is crammed and the shopping centre is difficult to access, especially for elderly people. The Minister of State noted...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Post Office Network (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: All the Minister of State's facts are wrong.
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Post Office Network (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: An Post's proposal to move the Thurles post office from Liberty Square is wrong. We have an €8 million plan to revitalise the square, which is being spearheaded by Tipperary County Council. That plan adheres to Government policy, which is supported by the Dáil, on regenerating rural town centres. It is a disgrace that the management of a State-owned company like An Post is...
- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: Last week, the number of patients on trolleys in University Hospital Limerick peaked at 92. When Nenagh hospital was downgraded, we were promised a state-of-the-art facility in University Hospital Limerick. It is obvious that that promise has been broken. I ask the Government to invest in the accident and emergency department in Nenagh hospital. Having it open 24 hours a day would do...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Future of the Beef Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: I thank the representatives of the two organisations for their presentations. The focus of the committee is profitability in the beef sector, how we can try to restore profitability in that sector and whether Food Wise 2025 is as relevant in 2019 as it was when it was formulated. I am disappointed that the focus of one of the presentations was on other farmers and trying to take money from...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Future of the Beef Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: To be fair to calves sent to the Continent, which produces top-class veal as a waste product, that is a scandalous statement which undermines the quality of all our cattle and exports. It should be withdrawn.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Future of the Beef Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: Mr. Graham stated farmers should pay for waste product being sent to the Continent. That is what he said and it will be on the record of the House. The calves from the dairy herd are not a waste product. As I stated, factories have intensively promoted Angus and prime beef schemes for the past five to ten years, as has Bord Bia. The idea that this product of the dairy herd is a waste...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Future of the Beef Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: A few hundred thousand euro was collected last year by Bord Bia due to calves leaving the country. If that is not able to provide lairage on the Continent, I do not know what kind of money would provide a shed to hold stock. There is plenty of money being paid for the calves leaving the country. It can support infrastructure for them.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Future of the Beef Sector in the Context of Food Wise 2025: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Apr 2019)
Jackie Cahill: I had to attemd another meeting and apologise for being away for some of the debate. It is not often that I agree with the Green Party Deputy, but I agree with his statement that we have to change. As it stands, the beef industry is not going to survive. I have never seen such despondency among beef farmers. Last week I said in the Dáil that it did not matter whether one was a...
