Ivana Bacik: It was 2008.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I join Senator Máire Devine in wishing Mr. Tony O'Brien well. I have seen his statement that he does not intend to renew his term when it expires in the summer. I welcome everyone back after the snow. Like other Senators, I commend all those involved in the emergency services, the local authorities, the transport infrastructure agencies, the health service and the ESB. Many people...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Feb 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I congratulate our colleague, Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, on his new position with TG4. As he will be with us for another month, it is a little premature to pay tribute to him. It has been a pleasure to work with him in recent months, in particular, as a member of the Technical Group. On my own behalf and that of my Labour Party colleagues, I thank him for working with us and look...

Seanad: Foreign Affairs: Statements (6 Feb 2018)

Ivana Bacik: The Minister of State, Deputy Cannon, is very welcome to the House. If I may, I will touch for a moment on an issue that is not related to foreign affairs. As a fellow member of the all-party Oireachtas cycling group, I commend him on his work on cycle safety. I wish him the very best with the minimum passing distance law which I hope will be introduced without any further delay. I know...

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Taoiseach to the House on this auspicious day, Lá Fhéile Bríde, St. Brigid's Day, as he said. I thank him for coming to the House today. I was delighted to be present for his speech. I apologise that could not be here throughout the debate. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Brexit Issues: British Irish Chamber of Commerce (1 Feb 2018)

Ivana Bacik: On St. Brigid's Day. I thank the Deputy for that. This morning we have a speaker from the House of Commons who is running its centenary programme for women suffrage. I apologise if someone has picked up on it already but I listened with great interest to what Mr. O'Neill said about there being no positives. From some of the events concerning Brexit which I have attended in recent...

Ivana Bacik: I was in London on Thursday night, hosted by HE Mr. O'Neill in the Irish Embassy at an event with 100 lawyers, under the London Irish Lawyers Associations. There is a significant number of lawyers, leading in their profession, with Irish connections either first or second generation Irish, many of whom, as Mr. O'Neill has said, have ended up in Britain after travelling abroad.

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Tánaiste to the House, and I welcome our visitors in the gallery. They are very welcome here for tonight's important debate. I commend Senator Black and her colleagues in the Civil Engagement group, as well as Senator Norris, on putting forward this important Bill. I had the pleasure of attending a Sadaka conference on Palestine some months ago, at which Senator Black's...

Seanad: Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018: Second Stage (Resumed) (30 Jan 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I thank Senator Norris. I will pass that compliment on to him. He very strongly advocated the rights of the Palestinian people, and indeed in addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2011, in speech that was groundbreaking at that time, he stated that Ireland would support the Palestinian bid to become a full member of the UN. He repeated this position on...

I wish to thank the Cathaoirleach, the Ceann Comhairle and members of our...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jan 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I would like to join in with others in expressing solidarity with Ms Joanne Hayes and her family in the context of the reopening of the case. I am glad to see it reopened. However, I do think a State apology would be appropriate. Like others, I was too young to know the details of the case at the time. I do remember in school hearing about it and being aware even then of the immensely...

Ivana Bacik: Hear, hear.
