Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I thank the Senator.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I thank colleagues for their kind remarks and I strongly welcome the resounding two-thirds majority for a "Yes" vote on Friday. The people have spoken very clearly. As somebody who has campaigned on this issue for nearly three decades since I was taken to court and threatened with prison by the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, SPUC, back in 1989 when I was president of Trinity...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: That is true.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: On behalf of my group I express sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the two young women so tragically killed in recent days, Jastine Valdez and Anastasia Kriegel. I am sure all colleagues will want to join in that. Perhaps the Leader could arrange to have a debate after the referendum on women's health. I hope, as do all who are canvassing for a "Yes" vote on Friday, that...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: They are called voters.

Seanad: Situation in Palestine: Statements (23 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and thank the Leader for organising this debate. I am one of the Senators who sought it. We were all utterly shocked at the appalling loss of life in Gaza, which the Minister of State acknowledged in his speech. As he pointed out, 14 May recorded the highest casualty toll in the Gaza Strip in a single day since 2014, with a total of 102...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: Like others, I express my utter condemnation of the appalling killings and maiming by the Israeli defence forces of so many civilians in Gaza, particularly a number of children. It is appalling to see carnage of this level. It is a new low. The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade had a session on Palestine with Omar Barghouti last week. Even at that point, it was not apparent...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: To those who ask what role the EU has, I say it has a major role, as we heard last week at a meeting of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade. It has a role as a major donor, as an entity, and as a bloc that has invested a huge amount of money in the rebuilding of buildings in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Senator Black will have seen this. The buildings were subsequently...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I support Senator Conway-Walsh's call for the Tánaiste to come in here because we need to put it to him that he should implement the motion already passed by the Oireachtas that the state of Palestine should be recognised by Ireland. That is one unilateral action we can take and that will put pressure on our European colleagues and Federica Mogherini.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: That is the sort of concrete action we need to take. I would be careful about expressing any words that blame or sound like blaming of any of the individuals involved in the peaceful protests.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: Doing so is problematic because there is no question but that the picking off of civilians by Israeli defence forces' snipers is an outrageous act of war, a crime, an international humanitarian crime. We need to be careful about saying anything that would in any way sound as if we were seeking to cast blame elsewhere. I commend the dynamic and dignified group of grandfathers I met outside...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: It was unforgivable and should have been stopped by the chairperson, whatever one’s view of the referendum debate. I am glad to say that in this House, we conducted ourselves with dignity and respect for one another's views in the debate on the referendum Bill. I hope we will see future debates in the media conducted in that way. RTÉ is to blame for failing to intervene to...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: With respect, I did not. On a point of order-----

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: That is a personal attack.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I must defend myself. I had attacked no individual but I regretted that attacks were being made against one individual.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: Let us be factual.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I did not have the opportunity this week to express my sadness at the death of Monica Barnes, former Deputy and Member of this House. I was a great admirer of hers and was delighted to welcome her on what was probably her last visit to Leinster House on 1 February to launch our Vótáil 100 programme along with other former women Members of the Oireachtas. She was a great campaigner...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: Perhaps the Senator might send me the contact details.

Seanad: Europe Day 2018: Statements (10 May 2018)

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy McEntee, to the House and I welcome the opportunity for these statements since we celebrated Europe Day yesterday. I thank the Minister of State for her speech. It provides us for a good opportunity to reflect on the future of Europe and the context for the many challenges posed by the Brexit vote. Clearly there are massive challenges posed by...
